2021 Award Season: When Are the SAG Awards?

The 2021 award show season looks different from years past, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the SAG Awards will still be taking place, with the nominees announced during February 2021. 

When are the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Here’s what we know about this ceremony, its nominees, and how to watch it live.

When are the SAG Awards?

Just a few days prior to the Academy Awards, fans will learn which actors earned recognition from the Screen Actors Guild, (or SAG,) Awards. The 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA with Screen Actors Guild Awards, will take place in 2021, honoring actors from feature films and original television shows. 

This award ceremony will be broadcasted live on Sunday, April 4, 2021. 

According to the SAG Awards website, “Connell, Sean Hayes, and Todd Milliner will again serve as Executive Producers.” However, the hosts of the ceremony have not yet been announced. Presumably, viewers will learn more as the premiere date approaches.

Will the SAG Awards be in person?

This year brought a few changes for multiple award ceremonies. The Grammy Awards, which typically took place during January, were pushed back until March to promote a safer environment for the attendees. 

The SAG Awards will at least partially be in person. Of course, there will be extra safety precautions due to the coronavirus (COVID-1) pandemic. This year, according to a statement from the ceremony, the 2021 SAG Awards will include a one-hour re-imagined special that “highlights and expands on our signature I am an Actor opening.”

Who is nominated for the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards?

Fans learned of the nominees during February 2021, only a few months prior to the scheduled ceremony. During an Instagram Live with Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs, the nominations were first announced. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, films were not required to have a theatrical release to be nominated. Instead, films with a planned theatrical release, that instead debuted on a streaming platform, were eligible for a nomination. Final votes from those in the Screen Actors Guild are reportedly required by March 30, a few days prior to the ceremony.

Nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture include One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Da 5 Bloods. Series’ like Schitt’s Creek, The Great, The Crown, and Ozark earned several nominations, as did Disney for their live-action adaptation of Mulan

Last year’s winners included the cast of Parasite, Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, and Renée Zellwege for Judy. The 2021 SAG Awards will broadcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, April 4, 2021, at 9 p.m. (ET) / 6 p.m. (PT).
