Gamers are always looking forward to the next big thing, so it only makes sense that we’re interested in all the rumors and leaks that slip through the cracks. So let’s try to peek behind the curtain of the video game industry to see the information the powers that be aren’t ready to unveil quite yet.
This week was a little light on rumors, mostly because it was so heavy on solid news, thanks to the Gamescom trade show that happened in Germany. With all the big news coming out of the show — including details on upcoming titles like Quantum Break, Scalebound, and Crackdown 3 — there just wasn’t much speculation going on.
But that doesn’t mean we’ve come up short. Here are three items, including leaks surrounding Halo 5: Guardians, a new expansion for Diablo 3, and more.
Halo 5 update leaks music and screenshots
If you bought Halo: The Master Chief Collection last year, you may have participated in the Halo 5: Guardians beta test Microsoft hosted at the end of the year. The beta testing app become useless after the test ended, so the vast majority of testers deleted the app. But anyone who kept the app installed was able to get a peek at things to come in Halo 5.
Microsoft issued an update to the app seemingly by mistake last week. The update included menus for the new Halo 5 multiplayer mode Warzone, as well as a nice chunk of unreleased music from the game’s soundtrack. You can listen to the music here (at least until Microsoft takes it down) and check out the screenshots here.
Microsoft responded to the accidental leak with the following message:
It’s unfortunate when work-in-progress content leaks, but this Halo 5: Guardians content is part of our ongoing private, external testing for multiplayer. We will continue to rigorously test Halo 5: Guardians to ensure the best possible experience for fans at launch.
Halo 5 is set to release on October 27 for Xbox One.
Has a release window for Final Fantasy XV finally been confirmed?
It’s becoming beyond ridiculous at this point that we still don’t know when the next core installment of this juggernaut series will come out. After all, Final Fantasy XV been in development since 2006 — nearly 10 years.
While there still hasn’t been an official release date announced for Final Fantasy XV, director Hajime Tabata has spilled a few beans to GameSpot. He said it is not coming out this year, but it will come out before 2017. I don’t know how good your algebra is, but if you do the math, the only year remaining is 2016.
“I think we’ll be able to tell you when we’re making the announcement around PAX Prime, at the end of this month,” Tabata said. The Pax Prime video game conference takes place in Seattle from August 28 to 31. Will we finally get an official announcement during the event? We’ll have to wait and see how confident Square Enix is that the game is nearing release.
Is a new Diablo 3 expansion underway?
Blizzard’s excellent dungeon crawler Diablo 3 launched in 2012. Two years later, players got an expansion called Reaper of Souls. That seemed to be the end of the line for the game — at least until now.
Blizzard has posted a job listing seeking an art director for an “unannounced project.” The hint that this project has to do with Diablo 3 comes in the description of the job, which lists as a plus “A passion for games with a deep understanding of the Diablo franchise.”
Hints don’t get much clearer than that.
If this listing does indicate a new expansion for the game is heading our way, it probably won’t launch for quite some time. After all, the project doesn’t even have an art director yet.
