4 Games Free to Xbox Live Gold Subscribers in October 2015

Being an Xbox Live Gold subscriber means you can play your games online, but it also means you get free games each month. The service costs around $60 per year, but the games you’ll get are worth far more than that, even if you’re only interested in playing a fraction of them.

And even if you don’t have an Xbox One yet, you can redeem your free games either on Xbox.com or your Xbox 360. Then if you buy an Xbox One in the future, you’ll be able to find those games in your account and download them for free. It’s like buying a new console and already having a library of games to play.

Without further ado, here are the free Games With Gold for October 2015.

1. Valiant Hearts: The Great War

Platform: Xbox One
Metacritic score: 81
Original price: $14.99
Available: October 1 – 31

Hundreds of video games take place during wars, but most of them put a gun in your hands and ask you to kill as many enemies as you can. That’s not the kind of story Valiant Hearts wants to tell. This adventure game drops in on the personal stories of four ordinary people whose lives are deeply affected by the war.

The puzzles that make up the gameplay sections have you do things like perform surgery as a medic and dig trenches as a soldier. Between puzzles, you explore the world and end up learning a lot about how the war affected normal people. That’s a rare thing to find in video games, so be sure to download this one.

2. The Walking Dead: Season One and 400 Days

Platform: Xbox One
Metacritic score: 92
Original price: $24.99
Available: October 16 – November 15

Telltale has been making adventure games forever, but it really redefined the genre with the 2012 game The Walking Dead. Here was a game with interesting characters, perilous decisions, unexpected plot twists, and a whole new way of presenting the action.

It all boiled down to a combination of smart game design and good storytelling. Since then, other companies have taken Telltale’s cue and started making exciting adventure games again. So far, none of them have reached the unforgettable heights of this one. If you haven’t played this game yet, be sure to grab it on October 16.

3. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Platform: Xbox 360
Metacritic score: 76
Original price: $19.99
Available: October 1 – 15

In 2014, Konami gave gamers a taste of what to expect from the then-upcoming fifth installment of Metal Gear Solid. While it has Metal Gear Solid V in the title, this single-level experience is really just a glorified demo for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which came out September 1.

Still, it’s a heck of a demo. It takes about two hours to beat, but it lays the groundwork for The Phantom Pain’s story, plus it lets you play with the new moves and gear you get to use in the full game. Whether you plan to buy The Phantom Pain or not, this is definitely worth checking out if you enjoy stealth action games.

4. The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season

Platform: Xbox 360
Metacritic score: 92
Original price: $24.99
Available: October 16 – 31

Yes, Microsoft is doing the old “double-dip” with this game, giving it to Xbox One and Xbox 360 gamers alike in October. That’s not the worst thing in the world, although owners of both consoles might feel a little cheated. As we said above, it’s a killer game, featuring some of the most memorable characters and plot twists of any title in recent memory. We’ll excuse the double dip just this once, Microsoft. Just this once.
