4 Video Games Free to Xbox Live Gold Members in Septemeber

One of the primary benefits of being an Xbox Live Gold member is that you get free games each month. Sure, the service costs around $60 per year, but the games you’ll get are worth far more than that, even if you’re only interested in playing a fraction of them.

Remember, even if you don’t have an Xbox One yet, you can redeem your free games either on Xbox.com or your Xbox 360. Then if you buy an Xbox One in the future, you’ll be able to find those games in your account and download them for free. It’s like buying a new console and having an instant library of games to play.

Without further ado, here are the free Games With Gold for September 2015.

The Deer God

Platform: Xbox One
Metacritic Score: 58 (on PC)
Original Price: $14.99
Available: September 1 – 30

Billed as a “3D pixel art adventure that challenges your religion and your platforming skills,” The Deer God clearly has ambitions beyond your average indie game. You play as a struggling hunter who shoots at the wrong deer and becomes reincarnated as the titular deity. From there, you gallop and jump through a seriously gorgeous world of forests and deserts that’s populated with bears, scorpions, and the like.

Reviews of the PC version were mixed, with critics citing its repetitive design as boring missions as weak points. But if you want to run around a gorgeous world and encounter pixelated wildlife, be sure to give this one a shot.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Platform: Xbox One
Metacritic Score: 86
Original Price: $29.99
Available: September 16 – October 15

The 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider was one of the high points of the console generation and certainly worth playing for anyone who missed it the first time around. It stars a young Lara Croft before she became the predator-killing, treasure-hunting badass you might remember from her earlier games. Basically, it’s an origin story that also happens to be a fantastic Uncharted-like action game.

With the sequel coming out in November on Xbox One, Microsoft has made the wise move to give this installment away to Xbox Live Gold members in September. It’s a slightly remastered version of the 2013 original, and it comes with all the DLC that game received. If you only play one free game in September, it should definitely be this one.

Battlestations: Pacific

Platform: Xbox 360
Metacritic Score: 76
Original Price: $24.99
Available: September 1 – 15

Want to play through historically accurate naval battles? If so, Battlestations: Pacific is the game for you. It lets you control the action as you guide your ships and planes in a game that mixes real-time strategy with direct control over the action. That means you can pilot fighter jets as they engage in aerial dogfights or guide hulking battleships and launch missiles at enemy ships.

The game is now six years old and hasn’t quite established itself as a classic of the genre, but reviewers liked it well enough when it launched back in 2009. Give it a shot if you’re interested in historical battles or real-time strategy games.

Crysis 3

Platform: Xbox 360
Metacritic Score: 76
Original Price: $19.99
Available: September 16 – 30

The Crysis series is known for one thing: awesome visuals. This third installment came out in 2012 on previous-gen hardware, so it probably won’t blow you away if you’ve played games like The Witcher 3 or Batman: Arkham Knight. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing worth seeing here.

This futuristic shooter takes place in a world run by an evil corporation named Cell, which means it’s up to you to lead the revolution against these powerful oppressors. Throw in a hostile alien invasion, a nano-suit, and an awesome bow weapon, and you’re looking at some high-caliber action.
