5 Actors Who Earned the Biggest Box Office Bucks in 2014

Forbes recently released its annual ranking of the top-grossing actors of last year, revealing which Hollywood stars were behind the most successful films of 2014. To compile the list, the publication added up the global box office numbers (taken from Box Office Mojo) of each star’s movies this year and then ranked the actors in order of their total worldwide grosses. Here’s a closer look at the top five actors on the list, in ascending order.

Other big names — Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Hugh Jackman — all also nabbed a spot in the top 10 with impressive box office grosses last year, although they didn’t quite make the top five.

5. Chris Evans

The Captain America star rounds out the top five with a total global box office gross of $801 million. Most of Evans’s gross comes from the latest installment in the Marvel franchise, The Winter Soldier. However, he starred in the post-apocalyptic flick Snowpiercer last year, as well. Though the film was only released in a few theaters in the U.S., it earned millions on VOD and also performed well overseas, helping it bring in $86.7 million at the global box office.

4. Mark Wahlberg

At No. 4, Wahlberg is also the highest-ranking star on the list with only one movie over the past year: Transformers (his just-released movie, The Gambler, hadn’t hit theaters during the time period examined in the ranking). Though Wahlberg had previously teamed with director Michael Bay in Pain & Gain, many were still surprised that the actor had agreed to take on the critically panned films. Still, while reviewers may have hated the film, audiences seemed to like it. Transformers: Age of Extinction ended up grossing $1 billion at the global box office.

3. Scarlett Johansson

The actress had a very busy year, both personally and professionally. In addition to pulling off a secret wedding and giving birth to her first child, Johansson earned a total of $1.18 billion at the global box office. She reprised her role as Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which earned a worldwide total of $714.1 million. She also appeared in last year’s sci-fi action film Lucy, which became a box office success with more than $458 million in earnings against a budget of $40 million, as well as the small indie Under the Skin, which grossed around $5.7 million.

2. Chris Pratt

Pratt had a pretty stellar year, mostly thanks to a little movie called Guardians of the Galaxy. Based on a comic series that many fans weren’t familiar with, few expected the film to reach the huge-ranging success that it did. The title turned out to be one of the biggest surprise hits of the year in its summer debut, grossing $333 million domestically and $772 million at the global box office. Pratt also voiced a character in another surprise hit, The Lego Movie, which earned $468 million, helping to bring the actor’s total global grosses in 2014 up to $1.2 billion.

1. Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence can add yet another milestone to her resume as the top-grossing actor of the year. The actress, who already has an Oscar win under her belt and scored her first Billboard chart hit with “Hanging Tree” earlier last year, boasted a total worldwide gross of $1.4 billion at the box office after starring in both the latest Hunger Games film Mockingjay – Part I and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The latter earned $746 million at the box office, while Mockingjay – Part I has brought in a worldwide total of $669.6 million so far. That number is expected to continue growing, as the film is still in theaters. Meanwhile, Lawrence will continue to be a big box office draw, with the final Hunger Games movie on tap for 2015.
