5 Actresses Who Are Also Best-Selling Authors

There comes a time in many entertainers’ careers when they branch out and try something new. For some, it’s a jump from television to movies, and for others, it’s a leap from the concert arena to the acting stage. Now, with books being hotter than ever, there are some stars who are taking on the world of writing and are actually doing surprisingly well. Here are five actresses who are also best-selling authors.

1. Tina Fey

Actress and screenwriter Tina Fey has been making us laugh for years on shows such as SNL and 30 Rock, but in 2012, Fey embraced her writing side and released a nonfiction book called Bossypants, in which Fey tells her life story using her trademark wit and laugh-out-loud humor. Bossypants topped the New York Times best-sellers list, with more than 1 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. The actress even received a Grammy nomination for her narration of the audio book.

2. Demi Lovato

Following a period of personal struggles with drug addiction and depression, actress and singer Demi Lovato candidly shared her road to recovery in Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year. The book is both a glimpse into Lovato’s life and a guide filled with inspirational quotes and meditations to follow throughout the year. The book made the New York Times best-sellers list, hitting No. 1 in the Advice, How-To & Miscellaneous section.

3. Chelsea Handler

Actress and comedian Chelsea Handler has never been one to hold back how she feels, and you can expect the same from her written works. Handler has penned four books — My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands; Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea; Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang; and Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me — that have made it onto the New York Times best-sellers list. The comedian has found so much success with her books that her publishers gave her her own publishing imprint, called Borderline Amazing/A Chelsea Handler Book, so it’s safe to say we can expect to see lots more from Handler in the future.

4. Hilary Duff

After starring in movies like A Cinderella Story and in her own television series on the Disney Channel, actress and singer Hilary Duff took a stab at writing with a young adult fantasy novel called Elixir. Duff partnered with Elise Allen to write the supernatural trilogy about destiny and soul mates. The book has hit the New York Times best-sellers list, and the actress earned positive reviews.

5. Tyra Banks

From the catwalk to movies to reality TV shows like America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks has a lot on her resume. And in 2011, she added “best-selling author” to the her list by releasing a young adult novel titled Modelland.

The supernatural book follows a young girl who is invited to attend a boarding school called Modelland. The novel hit the New York Times best sellers-list, debuting at No. 2 in the children’s chapter book section.
