5 Celebrity Relationships that Ended in a Bitter Divorce
Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber have been married for 2 decades. It’s been 22 years for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have enjoyed wedded bliss for over 30 years, according to InStyle.
Unfortunately, these marital unions are more the exception than the rule in Hollywood. Here’s a look at some celebrity couples who seemed to hold such promise, only to end on a very bitter note.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
According to CNN, Depp and Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009, and married in 2015. Heard filed for divorce after only 15 months of marriage. Depp recently filed a $50 million defamation suit against Heard, provoked by an op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post in December that accused Depp of physical abuse and drug use.
“Whenever he was using I worried for both of us,” Heard stated in the filing, according to CNN. “He would become a totally different person, often delusional and violent. We called that version of Johnny, ‘the Monster.’ I remember being afraid that Johnny might not know when to stop, and that he might kill me.”
Depp continues to maintain his innocence. “I never abused Ms. Heard or any other woman. She was the perpetrator, and I was the victim,” Depp said, according to Deadline. I have denied Ms. Heard’s allegations vehemently since she first made them in May 2016 … I will continue to deny them for the rest of my life.” The couple had no children together.
Jon & Kate Gosselin
The couple was the epitome of reality star drama. Raising their twins and sextuplets in front of cameras for TLC’s Jon and Kate Plus 8 took its toll, where the two separated in 2009, according to Café Mom. Bad behavior, trash talking, and mud-slinging followed from both sides that would usually end up in the tabloids.
Along with their relationship, their show also ended in 2009. Café Mom noted that Jon would later describe the 10-year marriage as more of a “business transaction.”
Tiger Woods & Elin Nordegren
The infamous story that broke of Woods’ smashed car window due to the handiwork of wife Nordegren and one of the golf pro’s clubs became fodder for gossip mags and talk shows. Woods’ rumored infidelity finally caught up with him, and Nordegren made it clear she wanted out of their 5-year marriage.
After the initial split, more women emerged as having been involved with Woods during his marriage, according to Pop Culture. “I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me,” Woods said as reported by Pop Culture.
Their divorce finalized in 2010, where Nordegren received a $100 million settlement. The two try to remain amicable for the sake of their two children, as noted by Pop Culture.
Alec Baldwin & Kim Basinger
Married in 1993, the volatile combination of Baldwin and Basinger was possibly doomed from the start. Both big in their careers and their egos, their tumultuous relationship began on the set of the film The Marrying Man. Filing for divorce in 2001, Basinger called their situation “very public and nasty,” according to E! News.
Baldwin was required to attend anger therapy and parenting school as part of their divorce and parental agreement, as E! News reported. The battling between Baldwin and Basinger spilled over onto their daughter Ireland, where in 2007 a nasty voicemail Baldwin left for Ireland made headlines, calling his 11-year-old daughter a “rude, thoughtless little pig” for not answering his calls. The message was leaked online and went viral.
Baldwin later made a public apology. E! News reported that in 2012, Ireland downplayed the call, telling Page Six “I’ve always had a really great relationship with my dad. The only problem with that voicemail was that people made it out to be a way bigger deal than it was.” Basinger recently said that she and Baldwin are “cool” now.
Wendy Williams & Kevin Hunter
Highly visible in the media today, the split between Williams and Hunter has taken many turns. Married for 20 years, the relationship has endured infidelity, health issues, and most recently Williams’ substance abuse. After the latest rumors of Hunter involved in another affair that produced a child, Williams called it quits, according to Vibe.
“I am not proud of my recent actions and take full accountability and apologize to my wife, my family and her amazing fans,” Hunter said in a statement to PEOPLE Magazine. “I am going through a time of self-reflection and am trying to right some wrongs.”
So far there is no word of reconciliation, and last month, their son William Jr. was arrested for a physical altercation between himself and Hunter, according to Cosmopolitan.
