Waiting for a new, exciting movie is never easy, but thankfully Hollywood is determined to provide us with trailers every step of the way. This week’s group includes the first extended look at Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, an in-depth look at the last episode of Star Wars: Rebels, and a tease at Pixar’s next big project among a bunch of other teasers.
1. Finding Dory
Pixar is coming off something of a redemptive year. 2014 marked the first year it hadn’t released a movie since the pre-Toy Story days, and it made it up to fans with the likes if Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Now that the studio is back in the saddle, it will be diving back into its successful franchises. Finding Dory is the first step in that process, focusing on its titular amnesiac and her search for her forgotten family. The first full-length trailer debuted this last week on Ellen, running us through some of the key story elements, and what we can expect from the Finding Nemo sequel.
2. Agents of SHIELD
Agents of SHIELD is a show that’s become the backbone of the MCU, offering some much-needed context to the large-scale events of Marvel’s movies. In Season 3 though, the series has taken off in its own direction. For the second half of the season, we’ll be getting a different kind of Coulson, as he copes with the cold-blooded murder of Grant Ward. Meanwhile, the Secret Warriors unite to take down a brand new threat from the reborn HYDRA organization.
There’s been a lot of speculation about how successful a Ghostbusters reboot can really be, especially without any footage to support the “this can actually be good” camp. Those reinforcements arrived this week, as Sony finally gave us the first full-length trailer. The new team of paranormal experts is an obvious change from the days of Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd, but it’s in good hands with the comedic power of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.
4. Star Wars: Rebels, Inside “Shroud of Darkness”
The last episode of Star Wars: Rebels had a lot to unpack and left us with plenty of unanswered questions. Was the Inquisitor voiced by Jason Isaacs in Season 1 really a fallen Jedi? Is Ezra doomed for a Vader-esque turn to the Dark Side? When will Ahsoka finally face down Darth Vader? Rebel Recon digs into all of this, shedding light on everything in interviews with the cast and creators of the show. It’s a full 7 minutes, so be sure you set aside some time to really get the whole experience.
Tensions are running high right now in Hollywood when it comes to casting African-American characters. Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone represents the latest controversy in this realm, in the wake of the first trailer for Nina debuting this week. Simone’s family has spoken out against the casting of Saldana, an actor of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, playing the African-American singer, even going so far as to call it “gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, nauseating, soul-crushing.” We won’t know the full extent of the issue until Nina releases, but for now it’s a movie to keep on your radar.
