5 Must-See TV and Movie Trailers: ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ and More
We’re officially clear of the Batman v Superman hype, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other movies to get excited for this month. Blockbuster season has arrived in full-force, and that goes hand-in-hand with all the trailers we could possibly handle. This week’s staff picks include a second trailer for a different kind of Batman movie, a telling TV spot for a coming HBO premiere, and an extended look at what’s come for the CW’s newest superhero show. Let’s dive right in, shall we?
1. Alice Through the Looking Glass
The choice to follow Tim Burton’s reimagining of Alice in Wonderland with a sequel seems odd, but like it or not, it’s coming. The second full trailer gives us a look at what Alice has been up to since her adventures in Wonderland. She’s apparently been committed to a mental ward for a “textbook case of female hysteria.” She quickly escapes though, launching into her next journey, this time taking on the physical embodiment of time itself (played by Sacha Baron Cohen).
2. Game of Thrones, “March Madness Promo”
HBO’s latest Game of Thrones teaser may only be 30 seconds long, but it still shows us plenty of new footage for the coming season. In it, we see more hints that Season 6 may be the bloodiest one yet, which brief flashes to each character coming with the warning that all men must die. Will Game of Thrones flip the table entirely and send everyone to an early grave? Right now, that’s looking more and more likely (and it certainly wouldn’t be unprecedented in a world where the Red Wedding shocked us all).
3. The LEGO Batman Movie, “Wayne Manor”
Last week saw the debut of the first LEGO Batman trailer, hot on the heels of DC’s unveiling of Batman v Superman. The general consensus was that the Lego version of the Dark Knight seemed infinitely more appealing than the joyless Ben Affleck depiction, and the second teaser does nothing to quell that tide. We see a shockingly self-aware Bruce Wayne, in a sequence that pokes fun at the character’s orphan-centric angst, even mercilessly making fun of past iterations from Warner Bros. If this is any indicator, The LEGO Batman Movie may be just what DC’s movie-verse needs right now.
4. Legends of Tomorrow, “A Look Ahead”
If you think DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has been crazy in its early episodes, just wait until you see what’s in store for the rest of the season. A lengthy teaser released by the CW shows us all manner of time travel insanity, including (but not at all limited to) the appearance of Jonah Hex in the old West, giant robots, the return of Ra’s Al Ghul, and a Terminator reference to boot. Legends has always been a show unafraid to revel in the craziness of its premise, and the latter half of its first season will apparently be doubling down on this.
5. War Dogs
If The Wolf of Wall Street was about young, American gun-runners instead of New York money men, then that’s War Dogs in a nutshell. It even follows in that same “based on a true story” vein, telling the story of two 20-somethings who got rich privately selling weapons to the American military in the Middle East. If the trailer is to be believed, it looks every bit as indulgent as Wolf of Wall Street, but it remains to be seen if it can capture the same epic, cinematic feel of its spiritual predecessor.
