5 New Video Game Leaks and Rumors: ‘Destiny’ and More
It’s time again to round up all the most interesting leaks and rumors from the wide world of video games. Many of this week’s rumors revolve around leaked information that’s supposedly going to be announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which kicks off in just a few weeks. We’ve got information and speculation about Destiny, Red Dead Redemption, and a new Resident Evil game.
But that’s not all! This week footage from a pair of canceled game prototypes hit the internet, including one from The Elder Scrolls series. Read on for full details.
1. Has info about the next Destiny expansion leaked?
Apparently so. An image of leaked marketing materials for an unannounced Destiny expansion recently hit Reddit. The image shows a poster with the words “Destiny: Rise of Iron” situated above what may or may not be Lord Saladin holding a flaming ax. There are also a few wolves hanging out at his feet, possibly hoping he has treats in his pocket.
The gaming site Kotaku, a frequent disseminator of Destiny leaks, reports that multiple sources have indicated that the leak is legit, and that the expansion is set to arrive in September, with an announcement coming next month at E3. “Rise of Iron” will apparently come with a new raid and be larger than the first two Destiny DLC packs.
2. What’s Rockstar’s next game?
Speculation has run rampant over the past week about the next game from Rockstar, the makers of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. The discussion was sparked when a representative for publisher Take-Two Interactive said during a financial call, “Rockstar Games is of course hard at work on some exciting future projects that will be revealed soon.”
This raises a couple of questions. First, is Rockstar going to announce multiple new games soon? That’s what seems to be implied by the “s” at the end of the word “projects” in his statement. Second, what game(s) is Rockstar working on? Many fans would love a new Grand Theft Auto, but with Grand Theft Auto V still selling extremely well, that seems unlikely. A more likely scenario would be a sequel (or prequel) to the 2010 classic Red Dead Redemption. Recent rumors suggest that Rockstar is working on that right now.
Then again, it could be a new IP entirely, or a sequel to another Rockstar game like Bully or Max Payne 3. We may hear what it is at E3 in June, but Rockstar has never had much of a presence at past E3 conferences, so let’s not hold our breath.
3. Will Resident Evil 7 be a reboot?
Video game analyst and insider Serkan Toto tweeted this week that Resident Evil 7 is currently in the works. He also said it’s effectively a series reboot that will go back to the original 1996 game’s horror roots. Capcom will apparently announce the game at E3.
Capcom has been going all-out in recent years with remakes of previous Resident Evil games, so it comes as little surprise that the company is working on a new official entry in the series. Going back to the series’ horror roots sounds like a good plan as well, since 2012’s action-packed Resident Evil 6 was relatively poorly received.
4. Footage of a canceled Elder Scrolls PSP game leaks
As most gamers know, the Elder Scrolls series is a collection of massive open-world role-playing games. What you might not know is that a handheld version of Oblivion, the game’s fourth installment, was in the works for the Sony PSP. The game was canceled, but you can see videos of what it looked like on Kotaku.
5. A Snow White game on NES
You probably don’t remember the 1993 movie Snow White: Happily Ever After. That’s because it was a flop. It took place after the events of the fairy tale and involved a new cast of villains. A tie-in game eventually came out on Super Nintendo, but that was after developer Sofel tried to make one on NES.
The NES game was cancelled near the end of its production, but a copy of the unreleased game has recently been discovered. You can read a meticulously detailed history about it on Nintendo Player, and watch footage of the scrapped (and surprisingly challenging) game above.
