Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be dominating the collective consciousness in theaters, but that doesn’t mean there’s been any shortage on exciting trailers in the meantime. This week, we get our first look at the latest in the Star Trek saga, our first new movie in the Harry Potter franchise in four years, and plenty more to round things out. Here are the 5 most buzz-worthy trailers you don’t want to miss:
1. Star Trek Beyond
It’s not often you see a trailer for a major sci-fi franchise actually get flak, but Star Trek Beyond made itself a unique exception this week. As the first movie in the series directed by Justin Lin, its initial footage looks a lot like Lin’s past work on the Fast and the Furious franchise. That aside, it’s a two-hour film condensed into a 90-second teaser, so there’s a good chance we’re still missing a fair amount of important information that could potentially redeem the movie.
2. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from the world of Harry Potter. Even so, you can always count on Hollywood studios doing everything they can to keep a popular franchise alive. This time around, we’re getting Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, adapted from the 42-page book by the same name, published back in 2001. Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander, the wizard who would later go on to be the leading authority on magical creatures.
It’s never been a better time to be a sci-fi fanatic. Synchronicity is the latest in a long line of exciting releases coming for the genre, digging into the heady concept of time travel. The movie is set in a Blade Runner-esque future, where time travel is thought to be impossible. One team discovers it nonetheless, leading to a maze of intrigue, temporal backlash, and greed from people who want to use the discover for their own selfish gains.
Starring Tom Hiddleston, High-Rise debuted its viral “trailer,” amounting to Hiddleston’s character giving viewers a virtual tour of a futuristic new building. The titular living space features everything from a grocery store to schools, making it so you never have to leave the comfort of your home. It carries with it a distinctly Cronenberg-y vibe, as it becomes abundantly clear that something’s not quite right.
5. Kubo and the Two Strings
Kubo and the Two Strings is the latest from LAIKA, the innovative animation studio behind Coraline and ParaNorman. With the studio’s visually stunning blend of CGI and stop motion, it’s managed to provide a decidedly more adult-leaning alternative to the animated genre. For its latest film, LAIKA dives into a mystical land of dragons, swordplay, and feudal Japan, in what looks to be yet another stellar offering.
