6 Actresses Who Are Also Directors
After spending some time in Hollywood on the big screen, some actresses decide to make the move behind the camera and start calling the shots. With their acting experience and years paying their dues in the industry, actresses tend to make great directors — with some even winning awards and earning critical acclaim. So, here are six actresses who are also directors.
1. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is more than just a powerhouse actress, she is also gaining praise for directing. The actress made her directorial debut back in 2011 for the movie In the Land of Blood and Honey. Now, Jolie is spending time behind the camera once again taking on the film adaptation of the book, Unbroken. The story follows the life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was taken hostage by Japanese forces during World War II.
2. Jodie Foster
Academy Award winning actress Jodie Foster practically grew up on screen, so it’s no surprise that she was drawn to working behind the camera. Foster directed her first movie back in 1991 called Little Man Tate, and went on to direct more films including The Beaver starring actor Mel Gibson in 2011.
3. Barbara Streisand
Barbra Streisand is not only an award-winning actress, she is also an award-winning director. After years of wowing viewers with her acting talent, Streisand sat in the director’s chair for the film Yentl back in 1983. Since then, Streisand has directed a slew of hit movies, including The Prince of Tides and The Mirror Has Two Faces. If you’re a fan of Babs’ work, you’re in luck — rumor has it she has a new directing project in the works.
4. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is known for starring in movies such as The Avengers and Vicky Christina Barcelona, but what many people may not know about the actress is she is also a director. Back in 2009, the actress stepped behind the camera for the short film These Vagabond Shoes, starring Kevin Bacon. Johansson enjoyed calling the shots, and is now working on directing her first feature film, Summer Crossing, an adaptation of Truman Capote’s first novel.
5. Courteney Cox
After starring in one of the biggest TV shows on television, Courteney Cox tried a different route and took a stab at directing. Back in 2008, the former Friends star directed a short film called The Monday before Thanksgiving. In addition, the actress has directed episodes of her hit TV series Cougar Town. Cox is such a fan of being behind the camera that she is also in the works to direct her first feature film.
She’s an actress, a singer, a dancer, and a director. Since there is nothing Madonna can’t do, it’s no surprise that she was drawn to directing. The Material Girl has directed three movies, including Filth and Wisdom, W.E., and the short film, Secret Project Revolution. Since “The Queen of Pop” is always working on something, we wouldn’t be surprised if she sat in the director’s chair again in the future.
