7 of the Best Movies Out on DVD in December
There are several notable movies arriving to DVD and Blu-Ray this month, just in time for the holidays. Not sure which ones are worth buying? Here are seven of the best films out on DVD in December.
1. Mississippi Grind, December 1
The comedy drama stars Ben Mendelsohn as a down-on-his luck gambler, who attempts to turn around his luck by teaming up with Curtis, a younger charismatic poker player played by Ryan Reynolds. The two set off on a road trip through the South, gambling their way toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans. The DVD release features plenty of extras, including behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the film.
2. Amy, December 1
The 2015 British documentary film depicts the life and death of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27. Though Winehouse’s family has distanced themselves from the movie, the documentary earned a hugely positive response from critics and was nominated for a slew of awards (taking home the prize for Best Documentary at the National Board Review). The movie includes exclusive Winehouse footage and performance clips and interviews with friends, some relatives, and collaborators.
3. Ant-Man, December 8
The movie stars Paul Rudd as Marvel’s tiniest hero. It follows master thief Scott Lang who, armed with the amazing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, joins forces with his new mentor Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to protect humanity’s fate. Pym and Lang must pull off a daring heist against insurmountable odds. The Ant-Man DVD release will include exclusive bonus features, including a gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, and audio commentary by Rudd and director Peyton Reed.
4. Minions, December 8
In this animated family-friendly flick, minions Stuart, Kevin, and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world. Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan lend their voices to the film. The DVD includes three animated shorts, as well as other bonus features (including a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray version).
5. Ted 2, December 15
The favorite foul-mouthed bear is back for a second round of outrageous antics in this comedy sequel, starring Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane. The movie follows Ted as fights for his civil rights when authorities rule that he is property rather than a person. The DVD release of Ted 2 features a bunch of extras, including deleted scenes, a gag reel, and feature commentary with producer/director/co-writer, MacFarlane.
6. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, December 15
In the most recent installment of the action adventure franchise, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Syndicate, an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF. There are several versions of the release available at various retailers, but most include extra cast and crew interviews and a commentary by Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie.
7. Bone Tomahawk, December 29
Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins stars in this horror western, about four men set out in the Wild West to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers. But their enemy is more ruthless than anyone could have imagined, putting their mission – and survival itself – in serious jeopardy. The upcoming DVD release includes several special features, including a featurette on the making of the film, the Fantastic Fest Q&A, a poster gallery, and a deleted scene.
