’90 Day Fiancé’: Elizabeth Asks Her Dad to Pay For Her Wedding To Andrei—And It Doesn’t Go As She Expects

Elizabeth Potthast’s Moldovan husband, Andrei Castravet, has had major conflicts with his in-laws ever since the 90 Day Fiancé couple first got together. Now, on the fifth season of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, it looks like Andrei’s many issues with Elizabeth’s sisters—and even more with her dad, Chuck Potthast—are far from resolved.

On the season premiere, Andrei shocked his in-laws (and even his wife, whom he hadn’t consulted beforehand) by announcing that he and Elizabeth would be hosting a second wedding in Moldova in just a month. Their little one, Eleanor, couldn’t be baptized in Andrei’s religious tradition unless her parents were first married in a local church.

Both Elizabeth and her family thought Andrei’s sudden announcement—at her dad’s birthday party, no less—was presumptuous. What’s more, Andrei demanded that Elizabeth ask Chuck to pay for the event.

On the second episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After season 5, Elizabeth reluctantly agreed to ask her dad to pay for the wedding. And while Chuck clearly wasn’t happy about the request at first, he told his youngest daughter he would foot the bill.

Elizabeth’s dad asked her why she hadn’t been in touch since Andrei’s announcement

Elizabeth was initially enraged with her husband for asking her to request that her dad pay for their second wedding. But she eventually felt she had no choice. “I’ve been putting it off,” the 90 Day Fiancé star admitted, “but there’s really no turning back.”

The new mom nervously headed to Chuck’s house to ask him the dreaded question. But Elizabeth’s dad seemed more concerned, at least at first, with why his youngest daughter hadn’t contacted him in weeks. “Since my birthday party, you haven’t talked to me at all,” he lamented.

Expressing her frustration with Andrei’s decision to go above her head, Elizabeth complained, “He did this out of the blue. We had been talking about planning the wedding, but he decided to announce it at an awkward time, on your birthday. But sometimes he just doesn’t really think things straight.”

The 90 Day Fiancé star’s dad wondered why the couple felt the need to do things so fast. “Look, I know that you want to have a wedding in Moldova, his country,” Chuck said. “Why the rush? There’s not a deadline.”

“No, there is a deadline,” Elizabeth explained. She told her dad that the “deadline” was in fact fast approaching if they wanted to baptize Eleanor in Andrei’s religious tradition. To do so, they had to first be married in an area church.

Chuck seemed to accept Elizabeth’s explanation. Still, he wondered how the financially struggling couple would fund the event.

“I understand you guys wanting to get married because of time constraints with Ellie,” he told his daughter. “But there’s another consideration—money.”

While Andrei had attended truck driving school and attempted to get jobs as a handyman and bouncer since arriving in the U.S., he hadn’t had any luck landing a full-time job so far. Now, Elizabeth’s husband was focusing on being a stay-at-home dad instead, making them a one-income family.

“Look, I’m your dad. I understand what you guys have been going through financially, since you got married and he’s been over here struggling to get a job,” Chuck told his daughter. “I just want to know. How do you plan on paying for that?”

Elizabeth bit her lip and sheepishly admitted, “Well, we were actually planning to ask you to pay.”

Her dad didn’t look the least bit surprised by the revelation, but he seemed a bit hurt. “I knew it,” Chuck declared.

The 90 Day Fiancé star’s dad confessed that he wished his daughter had come to him with the news earlier and that Andrei and Elizabeth had come to talk to him on their own. “I’m not surprised that he expects me to pay for the wedding. I’m surprised that you didn’t say to him, ‘If you expect my dad to pay for the wedding, then we need to go talk to him,’” Chuck told Elizabeth. “You’re just taking me for granted.”

Chuck told 90 Day Fiancé producers that he was put off by Andrei’s refusal to talk to him face-to-face. He especially wished that Andrei hadn’t placed the burden of the request on Elizabeth. “I feel Andrei should be the one to come to me…especially when it’s in his country,” he explained. “He sends his wife over, my daughter…that’s no way to go about it.”

Andrei’s father-in-law agreed to foot the bill

Breaking down in tears, Elizabeth admitted that she was embarrassed to ask her dad for the money. But, she claimed, Andrei had made her feel pressured to go to him herself.

“Honestly, I don’t want you to have to pay for it. I don’t,” Elizabeth cried. “But I really feel like I’m caught in the middle of it.”

Chuck softened as his daughter continued to break down in front of him. “This is the last thing I want to do,” the 90 Day Fiancé star confessed. “He’s putting it all on me, and I don’t want to deal with it. It’s just a lot at once.”

Elizabeth told TLC producers that she often felt “caught in the middle” between her husband and her family. “I really think that asking my dad for this money will create even more tension between him and Andrei,” she said. “I feel like all the weight is on my shoulders.”

But Elizabeth’s dad was far gentler and more accepting towards her request than she might have expected. “Sweetie, you know I’m going to be there for you,” he told her. “Look, you know I’m gonna pay for your wedding.”

The 90 Day Fiancé star protested, “I don’t want you to say yes because I’m getting emotional.”

“No,” Chuck reassured her as he pulled her in for a hug. “I’m saying yes because I want to see you happy.”

Elizabeth told producers that her dad’s agreement to pay for her Moldovan wedding was a huge “relief” and a “weight off her shoulders.” Now, she explained, she could just focus on wedding planning and enjoying the process.

Still, though, she was worried that Andrei’s demands would drive even more of a wedge between him and her family. “I really hope that Andrei will appreciate this, and my dad won’t hold it against him,” the 90 Day Fiancé star declared.
