’90 Day Fiancé’: Why Anna’s Son Says Her Wedding to Mursel is ‘Stupid’

Anna Campisi and Mursel Mistanoglu, a couple on Season 7 of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé, have a few key similarities. They’re both beekeepers, passionate about all things pollen and honey. In fact, that’s how the pair met online in a beekeeping enthusiasts’ group. They’re also both 38 years old.

However, that’s where their similarities end. Mursel is a single devout Muslim from Turkey, while Anna is a divorced mother of three from Nebraska. Their cultural differences and language barrier have posed major problems since Mursel came to the U.S. to be with Anna.

On the Dec. 8 episode of 90 Day Fiancé, “Premature Departure,” tensions between Mursel and Anna’s three sons, Joey, Gino, and Leo, became all the more troubling. Mursel admitted earlier in Season 7 that he hadn’t told his family that Anna’s sons existed, which understandably upset the boys. In this episode, Joey even told Mursel outright that he didn’t want him marrying his mother.

Anna says things haven’t gone well since Mursel moved in

Anna admitted that Mursel’s first 90 days in the U.S. weren’t exactly going well. “Ever since the boys found out that Mursel is keeping the boys a secret from his family, Joey just hasn’t been giving them a chance,” she explained to 90 Day Fiancé producers. “He’s been just really rude…Joey just hasn’t made an effort.”

Still, the 90 Day Fiancé star held out hope that things would improve if Mursel and her boys spent more time together. “What do you think about spending a little more time with Mursel to get to know him?” she asked Joey, Gino, and Leo.

The boys joked, “You have to pay us by the minute,” and said they weren’t at all interested.

Wedding prep brought family tensions to a head

Things got even worse for the burgeoning family when Anna took Mursel and her sons to buy matching suits for the 90 Day Fiancé couple’s upcoming wedding.

But Joey wasn’t thrilled with the suits or wedding prep in general. “Do you want something different?” asked Anna of her oldest son. “I don’t care,” Joey shot back.

Still, Anna felt a little more hopeful after she saw her fiancé and sons dressed up to the nines. “I thought Joey and Mursel looked really nice in the matching suits, and it’s making me a little more excited for the big day,” she told producers.

Joey told Mursel his upcoming wedding to Anna was ‘stupid’

For his part, Mursel said he wanted to make more of an effort to get along with Anna’s oldest son.

“Joey and I do not get along in the house, and I know this upsets Anna. I want to try to make Anna happy. If we talk, maybe we can come to an understanding,” he told 90 Day Fiancé producers.

But when Mursel approached Joey about his feelings about the wedding, the teenager was noncommittal, simply saying “I don’t know.”

Joey was straightforward with TLC producers about his dislike for his mother’s husband-to-be. “My relationship with Mursel is nothing, it doesn’t matter. He’s just there,” he said.

With the couple’s translation app, Anna asked Mursel to let her sons know if he had finally come clean to his family about them. “Joey wants to know if you told your parents about the boys,” she said through the smartphone.

When Mursel admitted he hadn’t, the problem became all the more obvious. Joey’s reaction, said Anna, made her “that Joey will never accept Mursel unless he comes clean about us to his family.”

Mursel took the blunt route, finally asking Joey simply, “Do you want this wedding?”

Joey’s answer was a resounding “no.” He added, “Because it’s stupid.”

Mursel shot back with, “If you don’t want me I can go.”

“So it’s that easy?” Anna’s son asked sarcastically in response. “Okay. Situation solved.”
