’90 Day Fiancé’: Why Was Natalie Worried About Mike’s Ability to Parent With Her?
Natalie and Mike have already struggled with cultural differences and K-1 visa delays on Season 7 of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé. Most recently, when Mike headed to Ukraine to visit his fiancee, their major religious differences became clearer than ever.
Mike is an agnostic/atheist who believes in ancient alien theories about the planet’s origins. Meanwhile, Natalie is a devout Christian who hopes to raise her future children in the same religious tradition. While Mike wasn’t bothered by their differences, Natalie was devastated when Mike wasn’t spiritually moved at a church visit in her home country.
On the Dec. 22 episode, “Judgment Day,” the 90 Day Fiancé couple had a major meltdown about Natalie’s desire to raise her children as devout Christians like herself. The argument raised doubts for both Mike and Natalie about their suitability for one another.
Natalie and Mike’s religious differences caused tension
At the beginning of “Judgment Day,” Natalie was sobbing uncontrollably on the bed, presumably moments after the couple’s confrontation in last week’s episode about their religious differences. “Baby, what’s going on here?” Mike asked her, dumbfounded. “I cannot,” she cried as he shooed the camera crew out of the room.
Meanwhile, Mike admitted to TLC producers that things had gotten out of control. “This whole process of waiting for this visa, it seems like our differences are really coming out,” the 90 Day Fiancé star said. “It’s hard right now.”
Natalie’s mother hovered in the background, fretting about the couple’s conflict as Natalie cried on the bed.
“You want me to stop eating meat and go to church?” Mike asked his fiancee incredulously, surprised at Natalie’s level of emotion on the subject.
Natalie was worried about Mike’s ability to co-parent with her
As Natalie tried to explain why she was so distressed, it became clear that her hoped-for future with Mike, including children, was part of the issue.
“When we talk about our child, I don’t want my child to be confused,” Natalie told Mike about their religious differences, as well as Mike’s carnivore status.
The 90 Day Fiancé star continued, “Because there is nothing worse to see that father and mother are not alike. It’s very hard. And I don’t want to put so much on my little baby that he doesn’t understand. For you it’s easy; oh, it doesn’t matter, he will choose. Does he believe in God or doesn’t he believe in God?”
“Yes, baby. They will choose. It’s not confusing,” Mike insisted, saying he wished Natalie would respect individual choices and beliefs. He later told TLC producers he didn’t understand the problem, as they were all “individual people” and he didn’t see that as “a bad thing.”
Many ’90 Day Fiancé’ fans thought Natalie was overreacting
After Mike headed to the bar for some solo reflection time, he returned to Natalie. The two agreed to compromise in terms of their beliefs, and Mike even told Natalie about his secret credit card debt. Despite the 90 Day Fiancé couple’s reconciliation, many 90 Day Fiancé fans were still dubious about their ability to make things work.
Many 90 Day Fiancé viewers took to social media to suggest that Natalie was more than a little dramatic about the whole thing and should have cut Mike a break. “Mike has a point it’s all about choice…and respecting people’s choices [because] it’s their lives not yours…and Natalie is speechless [because] Mike was speaking real stuff,” wrote one fan on Twitter.
Others believed Natalie’s reactions to Mike were disproportionate. “Natalie didn’t just get emotional over Mike not believing in God. She practically had a nervous breakdown,” one viewer argued.
