’90s Sitcom ‘Mad About You’ Reboot Premieres This Year; Watch The Trailer Here
Nothing will stop the revival of old characters who first found popularity during the ‘80s or ‘90s. We’ve already welcomed shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Charmed, and Full House into this era and Gremlins and Party of Five are also on the way. But in case you didn’t know, the Buchmans from Mad About You are coming back too!
The sitcom ran from 1992 to 1999 and starred Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as married New Yorkers Jamie and Paul Buchman. Audiences would watch the NBC hit every week to see the lovey-dovey couple tackle relationship issues, family dynamics, and their professional lives with humor.
Mad About You aired around the same time as Friends and even had a crossover event with the fan favorite series. No longer newlyweds or new parents, the Buchmans will be reintroduced to viewers with a fresh set of family challenges and laughs.
‘Mad About You’ reboot will air this fall
After a handful of false starts, the series is being resurrected on Charter’s Spectrum network as a Spectrum original. It was ordered back in March 2019 and since then, the show has been stacking up its roster of cast and crew.
This time around, Mad About You picks up twenty years later, following Jamie and Paul into a new chapter of their lives. According to Spectrum’s press release, the show will focus on the couple and their college-age daughter:
“The series will explore the fertile ground of modern marriage through the eyes of the Buchmans as newly minted empty-nesters after dropping their unpredictable, hard-to-control daughter Mabel (Abby Quinn) off at college.”
Per The Wrap, Mad About You won 12 Emmys during its run in the ‘90s, and it should be noted that it also earned a Golden Globe in 1995 for Best Television Series.
Who’s on board with the ‘Mad About You’ 2020 cast
Along with Reiser and Hunt, Anne Ramsay and Jerry Adler will also be reprising their roles, TV Insider reports. Ramsay played Jamie’s neurotic, psychologically imbalanced younger sister, Lisa, and Adler was the Buchmans’ building superintendent. John Pankow and Richard Kind are due to return as their characters as Ira Buchman and Mark Devanow, respectively.
Peter Tolan will serve as showrunner for the Sony Pictures series. When Charter initially made the announcement about the show’s return, Hunt and Reiser released a joint statement expressing their excitement:
“We are so excited to finally be doing this and thrilled to have Peter Tolan as our fearless captain. We promise you the same funny and heartwarming show – as soon as we can remember what’s funny about being older. It’s going to be great.”
When will the reboot air?
Production began this month and Spectrum plans on debuting the first six episodes of Mad About You on Nov. 20. An additional six episodes will be released on Dec. 20. Fans should be aware that this will be a limited run and there is no word on whether a second installment is in the works.
For diehard fans of Mad About You, Spectrum has the entire library of episodes available for viewing via its on-demand offerings.
