A Florence Pugh-Led ‘Black Widow’ Sequel Could Eventually Happen

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release dates of many movies, including Black Widow, have been pushed back a few months.

That said, this pandemic hasn’t stopped Marvel Cinematic Universe fans from speculating about the future of the MCU.

One of the more curious aspects about Black Widow is that, unlike most MCU movies, it’s actually a prequel movie since the character of Black Widow died during Avengers: Endgame.

With Scarlett Johansson seemingly leaving the MCU, fans are speculating that Johansson’s co-star, Florence Pugh, will join the MCU in her place. Here’s a look at how that could happen, according to fans.

‘Black Widow’ reception matters the most

As Marvel fans on Reddit said, ultimately, a sequel will only happen if fans want it to happen. Marvel loves to cater to its fans, so if fans don’t like the Black Widow movie, then Marvel probably won’t make sequels to it. Of course, nobody knows how good the movie is since nobody has seen it yet, but that will change when it premieres in theaters in November 2020.

That said, Marvel hasn’t made a terrible movie yet, so in all likelihood, fans will enjoy Black Widow. On top of that, Marvel has shown that even if fans don’t like a movie, Marvel can change things up for the sequel. That’s what happened with Thor: The Dark World. Fans didn’t enjoy that movie very much, so Marvel changed course and hired Taika Waititi to direct Thor: Ragnarok

This could be Scarlett Johansson’s last MCU movie

As fans said, it’s very likely that Johansson’s character, Natasha Romanoff, permanently died in Avengers: Endgame. In the comics, there are a lot of tricks that the writers can pull to bring people back from the dead, but the MCU seems to be shy about using them.

If she gets brought back to life, then that cheapens her death in Avengers: Endgame, and it also opens up the possibility of bringing Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man back from the dead, too.

That’s why fans are pretty sure that Black Widow will be Johansson’s last hurrah in the MCU. It’s her solo movie that she and many MCU fans have been asking for. That said, Marvel loves planning things out years in advance. It doesn’t really make sense to do a movie and not make sequels with the characters.

For that reason, some fans think that Marvel will actually bring Johansson back in the future. Nobody knows how that’ll happen, but it’s possible. The more likely scenario though, is that the Black Widow movie will be a trilogy that’ll feature Pugh as Black Widow.

How Florence Pugh can become Black Widow

While Romanoff’s alter-ego in the movies is Black Widow, Black Widow is actually a title that’s given to all the women who graduate from that secret Soviet spy school that she graduated from. Pugh’s character, whose name is Yelena Belova, has also graduated from that school, so she is also technically a Black Widow.

As a result, it’s entirely possible that Johansson will only star in the first Black Widow movie, while Pugh will take over for her and become the Black Widow. That said, some fans speculate that, while Pugh will have a future in the MCU, she won’t be the Black Widow. That’s because the Marvel comics can be pretty confusing since so many characters are called the same thing.

Marvel, for the sake of the audience, may choose to give Pugh’s character a different title, so that fans don’t confuse her with Johansson’s character. That said, while most Marvel fans think that Pugh will have a future in the MCU, there’s always the possibility that she won’t. While it’s highly unlikely, it’s still possible that Marvel will make more prequel movies starring Johansson as the Black Widow instead.
