A Second Spin-Off of ‘The Walking Dead’ Is Coming to AMC in 2020
You can’t stop zombies. A second spin-off of AMC’s The Walking Dead is on the horizon, the network announced on Monday, April 8. The new show follows Fear the Walking Dead, the first spin-off of the hit series, which premiered in 2015 and will return for its fifth season on June 2.
The new show will premiere in 2020
So far, details about the new addition to The Walking Dead universe are sparse. We do know that the show will start filming this summer in Virginia and that it will premiere on AMC sometime in 2020.
Matt Negrete, who has been a writer and producer on The Walking Dead for the past five seasons, will serve as showrunner. There will be 10 episodes in the first season. No details about the cast have been announced.
“I can’t wait for the fans of the franchise to see what we’ve been cooking up,” Negrete said in a statement.
This Walking Dead spinoff will focus on two young women
While we don’t yet know who will star in the as-yet-untitled show, AMC did reveal that it will be a bit different from The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. Both of those shows focused, at least initially, on groups of survivors who must adjust to life after the zombie apocalypse. In contrast, this new series will tell the story of two young women who are part of the first generation to come of age after the zombie outbreak destroys civilization as we know it.
“Showing audiences an unseen pocket of The Walking Dead Universe steeped in a new mythology is a very cool way to celebrate a ‘Decade of the Dead’ on TV and over fifteen years of Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic,” said chief content officer Scott Gimple in a statement.
“Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers in TWD’s long history — I’m thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we’ve seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world,” Gimple added.
What about the Rick Grimes movies?
The new show isn’t the only fresh project The Walking Dead team has in the works. A series of three television movies that will continue the story of Rick Grimes are also in development.
Andrew Lincoln, who plays Grimes, left The Walking Dead midway through Season 9 so he could spend more time with his family. But his character didn’t die. Instead, after blowing up a bridge to stop a horde of advancing walkers, he was rescued by a mysterious woman in a helicopter. The new movies will “tell the story of what happens after that helicopter flight,” Gimple told EW in November 2018.
“He’s flying off in a helicopter, away from Virginia, and it’s going to be a new world — a very new situation with its own history, and very, very different from what we’ve seen before,” he added.
Lincoln has said that he thinks the movies will bring a conclusive end to Rick Grimes’s story.
“I wanted to finish telling his story in the way that we began it: with a filmic sensibility on a bigger scale and a more contained story — with an endpoint,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “There is something exciting about moving toward an endgame for Rick’s story that appealed to me.”
