A Timeline of Elon Musk’s Marriage and Dating History
We know Elon Musk best for his business ventures — and that’s partially because of how close he keeps his personal life to his chest. But while he’s helping construct ideas for SpaceX or creating the future of cars with Tesla, he’s also had some serious relationship hiccups in the past. From failed marriages to heart-wrenching breakups, you probably never knew just how much Musk doesn’t want to be alone. But he’s said himself that having a partner is an extremely important aspect to his life.
The talented CEO has gotten candid about the relationships in his past in interviews before. Here’s an easy-to-follow timeline of who he dated and married, and when.
1. Justine Wilson
Musk’s longest relationship was with Justine Wilson (now Justine Musk, as she kept his last name post-divorce). She told Marie Claire that she met Musk while they were both attending Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. They met when Musk approached her and asked her out for ice cream — and even though she agreed, she later blew him off. Musk then went to get ice cream anyway and showed up with “two chocolate-chip ice cream cones dripping down his hands. He’s not a man who takes no for an answer.”
They were married in January 2000. Musk and Wilson had a son together, Nevada, who died of sudden infant death syndrome, which put a rift in their relationship. They later had twins and triplets. Musk then filed for divorce in 2008, and Justine Wilson says she’s estranged from him now and handles the children via his assistant.
2. Talulah Riley
Justine Musk told Marie Claire that just six weeks after her husband filed for divorce, he told her he was newly engaged to Talulah Riley. Riley’s an American actress, and she moved to Los Angeles to be closer to her fiance at the time. Interestingly enough, Justine Musk also said that she actually really liked Talulah Riley, as they communicated during the divorce proceedings.
By 2010, Riley and Musk were married, The Independent reports. But just two years later, news got out that they were divorcing. Musk also allegedly tweeted to Riley at the time, “It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever. You will make someone very happy one day.”
3. Cameron Diaz
Rumored dating: 2013
Just a year after his divorce from Riley, rumors swirled that well-known actress Cameron Diaz and Musk were involved. E! News reports the rumors began when Diaz purchased a Tesla early on in 2013. After that, more rumors surfaced that Musk was visiting Diaz in Los Angeles while he worked at the Tesla headquarters in Palo Alto, California.
If there was a romance here, it didn’t last very long, though.
4. Talulah Riley (again)
Riley and Musk married and divorced once — but they decided to give things another shot in 2013. Business Insider notes the two reconciled and remarried again in 2013. In 2014, Musk allegedly filed for divorce again, but he later withdrew it. Their marriage lasted a mere three years until Riley reportedly filed for divorce in 2016, which was finalized.
The two apparently remained on good terms, however, which is better than how Musk and his first wife ended their marriage. During a Rolling Stone profile of Musk, Riley even made an appearance. She’s also said she still sees him “all the time.”
5. Amber Heard
This on-again, off-again relationship made a ton of headlines. People reports they were first seen together in 2016 after Heard finalized her divorce from Johnny Depp and Musk was going through his divorce with Riley. By 2017, these two were stepping out in public together. Their fling didn’t last long, however, as they broke up later that year.
Rumors resurfaced that Heard and Musk may have been back together in early 2018. However, by February 2018, People says they called it quits for good, though they remained on fine terms. A source close to the two of them said, “Elon decided it was time to end it and Amber agreed. They both still care deeply for each other but the timing wasn’t right.” It appears their busy schedules were to blame.
Elon Musk and musician Claire Elise Boucher, better known as Grimes, kept their relationship quiet, but all bets were off when they attended the 2018 Met Gala together. Page Six reports the two of them met online around April 2018 after reportedly making the same joke about artificial intelligence. Musk has also tweeted her videos before, calling one, “Best music video art I’ve seen in a while.”
Their online banter has captured the attention of many — we’ll just have to see if they can last.
