How Long Will the Academy Awards Ceremony in 2019 Be?
The 2019 Academy Awards are almost here. Every year, those who work in film gather to celebrate the past year’s greatest achievements. As with years past, there has been plenty of controversy leading up to the Oscars, but never more so than this year. Here’s what you need to know about the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony, including its length.
This year, there won’t be a host for the Oscars
One of the most shocking announcements came when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that there won’t be a host for the 2019 Academy Awards. This occurred after comedian Kevin Hart was selected but then chose to step down (or was maybe fired) when controversial comments he made in the past were brought to light.
This isn’t the first time the show has gone without a host. Exactly 30 years ago, the 61st Academy Awards ceremony did not have one, and it was famously awful. Without someone to steer the show around awkward moments and to shape the opening monologue/number, there are bound to be missteps.
Because the Oscars are airing on ABC, here’s who might show up
The 2019 Academy Awards will be shown on ABC, as they are every year. ABC is owned by Disney, which also owns numerous other major brands, including Marvel. Because of the success and major star power associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reports began to surface that the Academy was trying to book several of the most notable actors from the franchise to step in and host. Though this could be interesting, there isn’t any solid proof behind this rumor.
The Academy made other changes along the way
The host debacle was just one of many this year’s ceremony has faced. There was the announcement of a new category, Best Popular Film, which called into question the way the selection process works. At one point, the Academy said that only two of the Best Original Song contenders would be performed during the ceremony, another decision that was quickly walked back.
But the biggest uproar came regarding the decision to have four of the 24 categories presented during commercials. Many argued that this shows a lack of consideration for the winners in those categories, which include Best Cinematography and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. This decision was reversed after famous actors and directors such as George Clooney and Guillermo del Toro criticized it.
How long will the ceremony be?
Though it proved to be a controversial move, the Academy had its reasons for having awards presented during the commercials — namely, to cut down on the ceremony time. The Oscars are given a three-hour time slot, but almost always run over. This will almost definitely be the case again for the 2019 Academy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 24.
