Which Actors and Actresses Have Won the Most Emmy Awards?

If either Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Allison Janney takes home an award at the Emmys tonight, they will tie the record for most Emmys ever won by a single performer.

Currently, that record is held by Cloris Leachman, who won eight Emmys for her work on A Brand New LifeThe Mary Tyler Moore Show, CherMalcolm in the Middle, and more. Currently, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won seven Emmy awards for acting, one for Seinfeld, one for The New Adventures of Old Christine, and five for Veep. (Technically, Louis-Dreyfus has passed Leachman if you count Emmys won for producing work, but when speaking specifically about awards won for acting, she has seven.) Allison Janney also has seven Emmys, having won for The West WingMasters of Sex, and Mom.

After Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Allison Janney, two other performers have won seven Emmys: Mary Tyler Moore (The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Stolen Babies) and Ed Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore ShowRich Man, Poor ManRootsLou Grant).

Then there are a few actors and actresses who have won six Emmys: Alan Alda (M*A*S*HThe West Wing), Tim Conway (The Carol Burnett Show, Coach), Tyne Daly (Cagney and LaceyChristy, Judging Amy), and Art Carney (The Honeymooners).

These are the records for most Emmys won by an actor for a TV performance, but the list of who has won the most Emmys total is a bit different. According to Emmys.com, producer Sheila Nevins holds that record with 31 total awards.

If Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins tonight, she will also break the record for most Emmys won by an individual for the same performance in the same TV show. Louis-Dreyfus has won five times for Veep, meaning she’s tied with Candice Bergen’s five wins for Murphy Brown on Murphy Brown and Don Knotts’ five wins for Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show.
