Adam Driver is an actor best known for playing Adam Sackler in HBO’s Girls as well as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars films. He has won numerous awards for his work in Hollywood and is poised to become an actor with longevity in showbiz.
However, life was not always this easy for Driver. In fact, he got into a lot of trouble when he was younger and even went as far as to start a fight club in his hometown. Read on below to learn more about this fascinating actor.
Adam Driver misbehaved a lot as a teenager
Driver described his younger self as a “misfit.” He moved to Mishawaka, Indiana, when he was seven years old and caused a lot of trouble in the small town because there was not a whole lot he and his friends could do.
“We would climb radio towers, set things on fire,” he shared with M Magazine. “We tried to set a tire on fire. That was really hard. There’s a place behind Kroger where we would Dumpster-dive for potato chips. One Dumpster, there was a chip factory behind it, and they used to throw out all their old potato chips.”
Adam Driver started a real-life fight club
When he was in high school, Driver also started a fight club inspired by Brad Pitt’s popular film with the same name.
He told Rolling Stone: “They had a big grassy field behind f***in’ Celebrations Unlimited, an event space that people rent out to get married or whatever, and we would go out there in the middle of the night and beat the s**t out of our neighbors.”
It was a very violent time in his life and he shared that he was willing to fight anyone. “There was a guy that rode by on a bike one time,” Driver recalled. “He said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ So I fought him.”
The club had some rules as well, such as “no hitting in the b**s” and the word “uncle” could be yelled out whenever anyone wanted to stop.
Adam Driver joined the marines after high school
After high school, Driver worked various odd jobs to make money. He was a door-to-door salesman at one point as well as a telemarketer at another.
However, after the attacks on September 11, Driver decided to join the marines. He later said that joining the Marines was a good experience for him, though things went downhill soon after. Driver got injured while mountain-bike riding and could not be deployed to the Middle East with his fellow soldiers.
He was soon medically discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal.
How Adam Driver became a Hollywood actor
Back in Indiana, Driver decided to enroll in college. He went to the University of Indiana for a short while before moving on to Juilliard to study drama. Although life as a student was a bit difficult for him since he was used to the routines of the military, Driver ended up graduating from Juilliard in 2009.
Driver started his acting career by working in New York City. He landed small roles in a few shows and movies, though his big break came in 2012 when he was cast as Adam Sackler in Girls. He eventually became a regular on the series and even got three Emmy nominations.
