Adorable Celebrity Marriage Proposals That Made Us Swoon

Sometimes it seems like Hollywood romances are a dime a dozen. It can be hard to keep track of who’s dating who — or, more often than not, who’s breaking up with who. But every now and then, stars find lasting love, a true connection that leads them down the aisle.

Since they involve famous names, celebrity weddings are a big deal. But sometimes, the moment that comes as a precursor to the vows — their engagements — don’t get quite as much attention. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t, though, because popping the question is often as romantic and unforgettable as their actual wedding day.

Here are some celebrity proposals that are completely swoon-worthy.

1. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

When you’re a Kardashian, it’s pretty much a given that your entire life is going to happen on camera. So when rapper Kanye West decided to propose to his girlfriend Kim Kardashian, he definitely took her reality TV situation into account. He spared no expense — and it showed.

The October 2013 proposal was set at the AT&T Park baseball stadium and featured a full orchestra, fireworks, and artful use of a Jumbotron. Kardashian’s family and friends were, of course, on hand, watching from the bleachers as West got down on one knee.

2. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is known for her fun-loving demeanor. And when she proposed to actress Portia de Rossi, there was definitely a wacky element involved. De Rossi had just returned home from a 2004 photo shoot with a goldfish, and DeGeneres decided — as they were staring at their new pet — that it was as good a time as any to pop the question.

According to, DeGeneres asked her girlfriend if she thought the silly moment was romantic. After de Rossi replied that she thought every moment of theirs was romantic, DeGeneres presented her with a three-carat ring.

3. Corbin Bleu and Sasha Clements

Actor and singer Corbin Bleu rose to fame thanks to his role in the High School Musical franchise. And he made Disney an even bigger part of his life when he proposed to actress Sasha Clements in front of Cinderella’s Castle in 2014. He even placed her engagement ring inside of a glass slipper.

Clements couldn’t say no to the royal treatment, and the couple wed in 2016.

4. Prince William and Kate Middleton

England’s Royal Family has always been all about tradition. So it’s especially romantic that Prince William chose a location with familial significance when he asked Kate Middleton to be his wife in 2010.

The couple went on vacation to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya — the very location in which William’s grandmother, Elizabeth II, learned she would become queen in 1953. It was there, with his mother’s engagement ring, that William proposed to Kate.

Their engagement may have been eclipsed by their elaborate and elegant 2011 wedding, but the quiet and heartfelt proposal was every bit as romantic.

5. Pink and Carey Hart

As a singer and public figure, Pink has always broken the rules. That’s also true of her personal life, especially in her relationship with husband Carey Hart. In 2005, Pink decided she was ready to settle down with her biker boyfriend. So she drew up a sign that said, “Will u marry me?” and held it up for him to see while he was in the middle of a Pro 250 class finals race.

Hart didn’t pull over to answer her question, so Pink upped the ante and added “Serious!” to her proposal sign. Of course, he had no choice but to respond — and the answer was obviously yes. The couple married later that year.

6. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka

There’s something to be said for making a proposal not just memorable, but meaningful. That’s exactly what actor David Burtka did when he asked his How I Met Your Mother costar, Neil Patrick Harris, to marry him.

The couple was on their way home when Burtka requested that their driver pull over. He asked Harris to get out of the car and then got down on one knee. As it turned out, it was the very same street where the couple first met.

Burtka and Harris married in Italy in 2014.

7. Bill and Giuliana Rancic

When The Apprentice star Bill Rancic knew TV host Giuliana DePandi was the one for him, he wanted to make sure he gave her a proposal she’d never forget. So he hired a private helicopter and took her for a nighttime ride over Chicago.

She thought he was just taking her to get an aerial view of the city’s Christmas lights, but she was delighted when he got down on one knee. Sure, it was a gutsy move, but it paid off.

The couple married in 2007 and have been going strong ever since.

8. Eva Longoria and Jose Baston

Actress Eva Longoria wasn’t sure she’d ever fall in love again after her messy divorce from basketball player Tony Parker. But her love affair with Televisa president Jose Baston proved her wrong — and his 2015 proposal completely swept her off her feet.

Baston popped the question to Longoria while the couple was on vacation in Dubai. He wanted to make sure the moment was perfect, so, according to the actress, he planned it for six months and kept it a secret.

Longoria told Conan O’Brien that she was unaware of the impending proposal and was actually busy Snapchatting their camel ride, when she saw rose petals and knew something was up. Baston earned major points for the unique locale and for pulling off the element of surprise.

9. Ludacris and Eudoxie Mbouguiengue

When rapper and actor Ludacris decided to propose to his longtime girlfriend, he went the extra mile — mile high, that is. He arranged to have the words, “Eudoxie, will you marry me,” projected on the ground, and then took her, along with some close friends and family, for a ride in a private jet.

Once they were in the air, Ludacris revealed the surprise and got down on one knee.

10. Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara

Most people put a lot of thought into their wedding proposals. And it’s clear that Magic Mike XXL’s Joe Manganiello definitely agonized over every detail of his proposal to Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara in 2015. But his careful planning didn’t make him any less nervous when the time came to pop the question.

Manganiello decided to propose to Vergara in Spanish, her native language. It’s hard enough asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you, but when you’re not speaking a language you’re familiar with, it adds an extra layer of stress.

The actor conquered his nerves and it worked out. Vergara said “Yes,” — or, maybe in this case, “Si.”

11. Taylor Kinney and Lady Gaga

Since she exploded onto the scene with her out-of-this-world music video for “Poker Face,” Lady Gaga has kept her fans on their toes with her fearless approach to music and fashion. But when actor Taylor Kinney proposed to the pop star, he kept things simple, super personal, and surprisingly traditional.

Kinney proposed to Gaga on Valentine’s Day with a unique, custom-made heart-shaped ring. He asked designer Lorraine Schwartz to add a message to his beloved on the band — “T (hearts) S.” According to Gaga, Kinney always called her by her non-stage name, Stefani, so the personalized message was extra sweet.

Though the proposal was one to remember, the two ended up calling off their engagement in 2016.

12. Seal and Heidi Klum

A proposal is, in theory at least, a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Singer Seal definitely wanted to make his proposal to model Heidi Klum a moment she’d never forget. So, in 2004, he had an igloo built in the Canadian Rockies and flew his soon-to-be fiancee there in a helicopter.

According to Klum, the igloo was decorated with rose petals and decked out with champagne and a gourmet meal. She was “ecstatic,” if a little freaked out by being out in the middle of nowhere. The couple married in 2005, but sadly divorced in 2014.

13. George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin

Most fans thought that George Clooney would be a lifelong bachelor. But when he decided that Amal Alamuddin was the love of his life, he wasted no time in proposing. Well, that’s technically not true — it took him nearly 30 minutes to spit out the question because he was so nervous.

Clooney proposed to Alamuddin over a romantic home-cooked meal and hid the engagement ring in a box. Because he was so out of sorts, he nearly blew the proposal and it took his now-wife several minutes to even figure out that he was asking her to marry him. As he told DeGeneres on Ellen, “She pulls [the ring] out, and she looks at it, and she’s like, ‘It’s a ring,’ like as if somebody had left it there some other time.”

Alamuddin eventually said yes, and even though Clooney’s proposal didn’t exactly go as planned, it’s the thought — and the romantic effort — that counts.

14. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen

Model Chrissy Teigen and singer John Legend have consistently proven to be one of the most fun-to-watch couples in Hollywood. That’s largely thanks to Teigen’s feisty personality, which came out in full force even when Legend was trying to ask her to marry him. During a 2011 Christmas trip to the Maldives, Teigen was feeling cranky — especially when she thought her boyfriend had only bought her a cookbook and slow cooker as gifts.

It turns out Legend was saving the best gift, her engagement ring, for last. But the couple wound up having a big fight — that is, until, he was finally able to propose. Sure, it’s an unconventional way to start a marriage, but it’s just so them.

15. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard

On their own, they’re two of the funniest people in Hollywood today. Together, they make up one of the most down-to-earth, goofy celebrity couples around. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell were together for a long time and had children before they finally tied the knot. But they kept their relationship unofficial for a reason.

They both believed strongly that they shouldn’t get married until everyone in the United States had that same right. So in 2013, when the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, Bell celebrated the best way she knew how. She tweeted a message to her longtime boyfriend, “@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove.”

Sure, it was an unconventional proposal, but it was heartfelt and sweet nonetheless. Besides, Bell and Shepard have always marched to the beat of their own drum.
