Alex Borstein Gives Moving Emmy Acceptance Speech Telling Women to ‘Step out of Line’
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is continuing to dominate during the award show season and this year’s Emmy Awards is proof. The cast is also getting a lot of love for their performances.
Alex Borestein won for her role and she unsurprisingly started with a few jokes. She then told a family story that led to her telling women to step out of line. Find out what she said and more.
Alex Borstein won for outstanding supporting actress
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continued to dominated the night of the Emmys. Borstein won for outstanding supporting actress for her portrayal of Susie Myerson.
Susie goes from working in a comedy club to becoming Midge’s (Rachel Brosnahan) manager. The second season left off on a cliffhanger with Susie having to make an important business decision.
The other nominees were Sarah Goldberg for Barry, Sian Clifford and Olivia Colman for Fleabag, Betty Gilpin for GLOW, Kate McKinnon for Saturday Night Live, Marin Hinkle for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Anna Chlumsky for Veep.
This is now the actress’ second Emmy win. Borestein mentioned not wearing a bra to last year’s award show. She then announced she isn’t wearing any underwear this year. However, her speech later had an important message.
She talked about her grandmother
The funny actress switched the tone of things by talking about strong women including show creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino. She then turned her attention to an important family member. She talked about her grandparents, and focused on her grandmother.
“They are Holocaust survivors,” said the Emmy winner. “My grandmother turned to a guard, she was in line to be shot into a pit and she said, ‘What happens if I step out of line?’ And he said, ‘I don’t have the heart to shoot you but somebody will.’ And she stepped out of line and for that I am here, and for that my children are here.”
She ended the speech with, “So step out of line, ladies! Step out of line!” The speech got a lot of applause.
Stars celebrated her win on Twitter
Other celebrities showed their support for Borstein on Twitter. That included Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Borstein’s win comes after Jane Lynch won an Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series and Luke Kirby won an Emmy for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for their role on the show.
Tony Shalhoub also took the stage before her to accept his Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. This is now his fourth Emmy win. He won last year for the same role and he previously won twice for his role on Monk.
This all comes before the third season of the comedy. Season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premieres on Dec. 6. The new season will also include new cast members including Sterling K. Brown.
