Who Will Replace Alex Trebek?
Many were sad to hear the news of Alex Trebek’s diagnosis with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Trebek, who has been hosting Jeopardy! since 1984, has become a part of many households. One questions some fans have is about Trebek’s replacement. If the star decides to step away from the show, who will step up to the plate? Here’s what we know.
Is Alex Trebek leaving Jeopardy! ?
After Trebek made his announcement, some were wondering if the host had plans to leave the show immediately so he could take care of himself. Despite the sobering diagnosis, Trebek said in a video for Jeopardy! that he plans to continue working. His contract is up in 2020 and he doesn’t plan to leave before then. Although roughly 95% of pancreatic cancer patients succumb to this type of cancer, he said he’s determined to fight back. In his video, he asked fans of the show to help him out by wishing him well.
How Alex Trebek feels about the future of Jeopardy! after he’s gone
What does Trebek think should happen to the show once he leaves? In an interview with Vulture, Trebek said the show must go on. He doesn’t feel Jeopardy! should end just because he retires. “It’s a good show,” said Trebek. “It should, and will, go on after I’m done.”
Alex Trebek never wanted to be the star of Jeopardy!
Being the host of a highly rated game show allows you to be in the spotlight and enjoy the perks of fame. However, Trebek doesn’t see it this way. In a 2018 interview with Vulture, Trebek said he doesn’t consider himself the star of the show. He makes a point not to keep the spotlight on himself:
You have to set your ego aside. The stars of the show are the contestants and the game itself. That’s why I’ve always insisted that I be introduced as the host and not the star. And if you want to be a good host, you have to figure a way to get the contestants to — as in the old television commercial about the military — ‘be all you can be.’ Because if they do well, the show does well. And if the show does well, by association I do well.
This is who Alex Trebek wants to replace him
Last year, Trebek revealed who he would like to replace him as the host of Jeopardy! In an interview with TMZ’s Harvey Levin Trebek offered two possibilities. He told Levin that he suggested the producers should consider Alex Faust, who announces the play-by-play for the Los Angeles Kings hockey games. “I mentioned to our producer not so long ago that the fellow that does play-by-play for the Los Angeles Kings — they should consider him,” said Trebek. Another one of Trebek’s suggestions was Laura Coates, an attorney who has shares her expertise on cable news shows.
