It was during the worst of his illness that Trebek has seen and welcomed his fans’ kindnesses toward him.

The ailing quiz show host told Michael Strahan during a network special in 2019 how much those expressions of concern have meant to him.

“I have learned something in the past year and it’s this: We don’t know when we’re going to die,” he said. “. . . people all over America and abroad have decided they want to let me know now, while I’m alive, about the impact that I’ve been having on their existence. They have come out and they have told me, and my gosh, it makes me feel so good.”

A treat for every fan of the beloved game show, Alex Trebek’s upcoming memoir, The Answer Is . . .: Reflections on My Life, is a behind-the scenes peek into Trebek’s life. Hosting Jeopardy! without fail, even through an advanced pancreatic cancer diagnosis, the Canadian-born television personality has become even more beloved and, as well, heroic to fans.

Trebek has stated that his reason for writing his memoir is to give back to his fans and to those who have given him encouragement in this difficult season of his life.

“I want people to know a little more about the person they have been cheering on for the past year,” Trebek wrote in part in his memoir.

What Trebek was paid for his memoir

In a conversation with The New York Times, Trebek, who turns 80 on July 22, revealed that writing the memoir wasn’t so hard, considering that he was quarantined and needed to keep busy. The amount he was paid for the work didn’t hurt and Trebek plans on donating each cent to charity.

“They offered me a good deal of money; it wasn’t John Bolton-type money,” he told the outlet. Bolton received $2 million as an advance for his recent book chronicling his time in the White House.

Featuring chapter titles written, Jeopardy!-style, in the form of a question, the book is expected to hear from Trebek on his marriages, his children, and his own childhood.

Trebek will also touch on those areas of his life and career that fans want to know most about, such as what he really thought of the most successful Jeopardy! players, such as Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer; why he shaved his mustache; and his thoughts on the Saturday Night Live impersonation of him by Will Ferrell.

Perhaps Trebek will reveal some jaw-dropping details as well about his life. We’ll have to wait and see once The Answer Is . . . hits book stores.
