All of Jennifer Lawrence’s Most Controversial Moments
Since she burst onto the scene in 2010, few actresses have commanded our attention like Jennifer Lawrence. Whether she’s delivering stunning performances, or making jaw-dropping statements, it seems like we can’t not care what’s going on with her.
That level of attention comes with a lot of scrutiny, though. And that means every move Lawrence makes is under a microscope. And from time to time, her words and actions become a big deal.
Here are all of Lawrence’s biggest controversies so far.
9. Baby, it’s cold outside
Lawrence doesn’t always comment on the controversy that follows her. But when fans flew off the handle about something Lawrence wore at a Red Sparrow press even, the actress had to say something. The dress in question was a revealing Versace number — and it, unquestionably, looked stunning on Lawrence. But the issue, thankfully, wasn’t with its plunging neckline.
Rather, fans cried foul because the actress was the only one of the Red Sparrow crew that wasn’t bundled up for the outdoor press event. She was also the only woman.
Cries of sexism and misogyny rang across the internet. But Lawrence, for her part, was having none of it. In a passionate Facebook post, she told fans that she didn’t understand why the controversy happened in the first place.
She wrote, “This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.”
Lawrence went a step further, and asked her fans to be more selective about their outrage. “This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism,” she wrote, also adding:
Over- reacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It’s creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THATS MY CHOICE TOO!

8. Oh, mother!
It must have been strange for Lawrence to be so involved in a controversy that really wasn’t about her. When Darren Aronofsky’s thriller, mother!, hit theaters in September 2017, she was front and center, though, when backlash hit.
First, there was the fact that the film itself was incredibly polarizing. Some felt the film, and its marketing campaign, promoted violence against women. It didn’t help that there were the reports that Lawrence was seriously injured on set (and Aronofsky kept rolling). And of course, there was the news that Lawrence was dating her much-older director.
Though she insisted they began their romance after Mother! wrapped, fans still found it weird that she’d date a man who put her through such an intense filming process. Lawrence later admitted that all the criticism surrounding the film was hard to take and contributed to her break-up with Aronofsky.

7. Lawrence isn’t always the best LGBT ally in interviews
In recent years, Lawrence has been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. But for a while, there, she made some fairly uncouth comments that left the community wondering if she was on their side.
In 2016, she again made some eyebrows rise when she characterized her fashion sense as that of a “slutty power lesbian.” Despite these uncouth statements, she has made it clear on multiple occasions that she supports equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.

6. Taking on Trump
It took Lawrence a few years to feel comfortable about sharing her politics. But she’s gradually gotten used to speaking her mind about everything from pay equity to the president of the United States. Lawrence really hasn’t pulled any punches where Trump is concerned. She’s been open about the fact that his 2016 election win “devastated” her.
And she’s also made some controversial comments about how she had some one on one time with him. In 2016, she told Graham Norton that when she found out they were at the same concert, a part of her wanted to confront him with a, “Hey Trump, f—k you!”
Then, in 2017, she told Oprah that she has already planned out how she’d approach Trump if given the chance. Lawrence made it clear that she wouldn’t have anything nice to say to the president. And, she said, their meeting would probably end with “a martini to the face.”
Some conservative pundits accused Lawrence of taking her criticism too far. But the actress refuses to stay silent. In a post-election op ed, she told her fans, “Don’t be afraid. Be loud.”

5. Here comes the story of a hurricane
No one expects Hollywood celebrities to be experts on climate change. But, when they speak up about it, it helps if they sound like they understand what they’re talking about.
Lawrence earned serious backlash and ridicule in 2017 when she told Britain’s Channel 4 that the rash of devastating hurricanes that hit the United States and Puerto Rico were a response to Trump. “It’s hard,” the actress said, “not to feel Mother Nature’s rage and wrath.”
She was widely criticized for the comments — so much so that she issued a rare statement about the controversy. Lawrence posted a follow-up to the interview on her Facebook page, hoping to clarify her position on Trump and the hurricanes.
The actress wrote, “My remarks were taken grossly out of context. Obviously I never claimed that President Trump was responsible for these tragic hurricanes. That is a silly and preposterous headline that is unfortunate, because it detracts from the millions of lives that are being impacted by these devastating storms and the recent earthquake.”
She then asked her fans to focus on what really mattered — helping the victims left in the wake of the natural disasters.

4. Wild thing
Lawrence has never been shy about the fact that she likes to have a good time. But after a fan’s video caught her in the midst of a particularly wild night, she felt the need to remind fans that she is, in fact, human.
In May 2017, Radar Online released a video of Lawrence pole dancing — well, at least attempting to — at a bar in Australia. The video itself wasn’t nearly as scandalous as headlines made it out to be. But Lawrence still owned up to the moment. Though, in doing so, she made it clear she wasn’t apologizing.
She wrote on Facebook, “Look, Nobody wants to be reminded that they tried to dance on a stripper pole by the internet. It was one of my best friend’s birthdays and I dropped my paranoia guard for one second to have fun. I’m not going to apologize, I had a BLAST that night.”

3. A snappy conversation
Lawrence has a long history of speaking her mind. That’s what fans like best about her. But after a scandal in the press room at the 2016 Golden Globes, fans wished she’d held her tongue. Lawrence was apparently offended that a reporter was holding his phone up while speaking to her, and gave him a very public undressing as a result. She told him, “You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro.”
When the reporter tried to ask her a question about the upcoming Academy Awards, Lawrence gave him a patronizing response. “We are at the Golden Globes,” she said. “If you put your phone down, you’d know that.”
Lawrence’s encounter with the reporter proved to be highly controversial. Some pointed out that he may not have been a native English speaker, and may have had notes on his phone to help him in the press room. Others felt that regardless of the context, she was being rude and unprofessional.
But another journalist in the room defended Lawrence, stating that her comments came across as lighthearted. Lawrence herself never responded to the backlash.

2. Laid bare
In 2014, a hacker released thousands of private celebrity photos online. Lawrence was among those hacked, and she once again became a lightning rod for the ensuing controversy. Many people were supportive of Lawrence and found it ghastly that her privacy had been violated. Others said that the hacked celebrities should have been more careful about the photos they’d taken.
Lawrence refused to be blamed or shamed after her nude photos were leaked, though. “It is not a scandal,” she told Vanity Fair. “It is a sex crime… It’s disgusting.”
The hacks remain a big part of Lawrence’s professional life. She said she considered not taking her role in Red Sparrow because it required a nude scene and she worried about the backlash. But ultimately, Lawrence took the role — and did the scene — so she could reclaim her nudity.
“One is for me,” she told Vanity Fair. “I got something back that was taken from me.”
Next: Lawrence’s tendency toward bathroom humor majorly backfired.
1. A not-so-sacred endeavor
When Lawrence appeared on The Graham Norton Show in 2016, it wasn’t the first time she used a little potty humor. But she wound herself in a wave of controversy after telling what she clearly thought was a funny story about some bathroom-related antics.
Lawrence told Norton that when she filmed The Hunger Games in Hawaii, she’d rubbed her butt on sacred rocks to alleviate an itch. “It was a huge dramatic deal,” She said. “And all the Hawaiians were like, ‘Oh my God, it’s the curse!’ And I’m in the corner, going, ‘I’m your curse. I wedged it loose with my a–.’”
Basically everyone agreed that Lawrence’s attempt at a light-hearted story was in bad taste. She was accused of being culturally insensitive for finding it funny that she had desecrated a sacred artifact.
Lawrence released a statement apologizing for making light of the moment. She wrote on Facebook, “I meant absolutely no disrespect to the Hawaiian people. I really thought that I was being self deprecating about the fact that I was ‘the curse’, but I understand the way it was perceived was not funny and I apologize if I offended anyone.”
