All the Reasons Captain America Shouldn’t Die in ‘Avengers: Endgame’
With Avengers: Endgame now right around the corner, expectations surrounding the culmination to a decade-long saga just keep heightening (especially given the critics’ reviews recently posted to Rotten Tomatoes). As fan theories continue circling the internet, many speculators have grown convinced that Captain America’s death is virtually undeniable.
Chris Evans has been outspoken regarding his plans to permanently leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Endgame, which has led many to consider a dramatic death sequence the most likely turn of events for the shield-wielding savior. The question is: would death be the most satisfying conclusion to Captain America’s narrative arc?
There are several arguments against a Captain America death, so let’s analyze the reasons our beloved Cap may just end this one standing on both feet, safely above the ground.
A Captain America death in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is too predictable
The Russo Brothers have stated several times that fans will not be able to correctly theorize this movie’s plot trajectory. Considering the death of an original Avengers to be a major – and easily guessable – plot point, there’s a high chance that the writers penned a less predictable exit for Cap.
Because of the knowledge surrounding Chris Evans interviews and the length of the cast members’ contracts, it’s more than likely that the writers devised a non-death infused conclusion to Captain America’s story for the sake of surprises alone. The audience should always be left guessing! Given the three hour runtime at play, the movie retains more than enough time to execute a more complex departure.
So, if Captain America doesn’t die, what would another satisfying end to his story be? The Russo brothers likely have an emotional, yet powerful, ending in mind. However, what could be more emotional than death?
Watching Captain America willingly hand over the baton would be more satisfying than watching him die
It is widely believed that Falcon or Winter Soldier will take over for Captain America following Avengers: Endgame. If this is destined to be the turn of events following Chris Evans’ departure, wouldn’t it be more satisfying to watch Cap willingly hand over the responsibility?
While it would be hard to imagine a reason, other than death, that Captain America would feel forced to relinquish his duties, it is still possible. And, it’s a possibility that would present a great challenge.
Challenges always make for captivating stories, as audiences rarely anticipate a narrative structure that seems antithetical to a character’s persona. How the writers would work this in is anybody’s guess. From drastically aging Captain America to providing him with a reason to no longer put his life on the line, seeing the iconic hero hand over his shield to a trusted ally may be a more emotionally stirring conclusion to his story. Whether Falcon or Winter Soldier takes the shield is anyone’s guess, but either way, the moment would be quite the tearjerker.
Is Chris Evans truly done playing Captain America in the MCU?
Killing Captain America removes all potential for the character’s return, and, while Chris Evans may feel done with the MCU, who knows how the actor would feel about reprising his role for a cameo a few years from now.
Chris Evans also said that he planned to direct, almost entirely, following Avengers: Endgame and he’s currently set to star in five upcoming movies. So, can we take this actor on his word? If so, killing him off wouldn’t be the worst move, but if there’s any hope he changes his mind about this too (like he did about working in front of the screen), it’s wisest to keep his character alive.
