All the Times Meghan Markle Challenged Royal Protocol Since Joining the Royal Family
Meghan Markle is changing everything we know about the royal family. The Duchess of Sussex, who tied the knot with Prince Harry in 2018, has accomplished a lot in her first two years as a royal. But her successes have not been without a good share of controversies, especially when it comes to breaking royal protocol. With another year under her belt, here is a quick look at how Meghan has challenged royal protocol.
Meghan Markle’s American baby shower
Megan made headlines when she held a baby shower at one of New York City’s finest hotels, The Mark, earlier this year. Although the party cost well over $100,000, Meghan’s best friend, Serena Williams, covered most of the bill.
Even still, royal expert Victoria Arbiter noted that Meghan had a right to throw the lavish baby shower as is a tradition in America.
“There’s absolutely no reason why Meghan shouldn’t have a baby shower,” Arbiter shared. “Showers are largely an American tradition and Harry, along with the rest of the royal family, would be more than happy for her to honor her own tradition and customs.
This past fall, Meghan Markle broke royal protocol when she stopped for a selfie during her and Harry’s tour of South Africa. The former Suits star snapped the pic with a businesswoman named Nikiwe Dlova, who promptly shared the filtered image on Instagram.
Members of the royal family usually avoid taking selfies, though they might think about changing that rule after Meghan’s successful photo.
Her aisle walk
There were many things about Harry and Meghan’s wedding that went against the royal family’s tradition. But one of the most significant changes came when Meghan Markle walked down the aisle.
Unlike previous royal weddings, Meghan was forced to walk down the aisle by herself for most of the way because her father, Thomas Markle, could not make it. Prince Charles stepped in and gracefully took her the rest of the way.
Skipping the hospital tradition
It has become somewhat of a family tradition to have royal babies in St. Mary’s Hospital. Princess Diana and Kate Middleton had all of their children there, but not Meghan.
According to Fox News, the Duchess of Sussex skipped this hospital tradition when she had her first child with Harry back in May. Instead, she gave birth to baby Archie at a hospital closer to Windsor.
Meghan Markle is keeping her son’s life private
Even William and Kate keep the lives of her three kiddos fairly private, but not to the extent of Meghan and Harry. The Sussexes did not reveal any of the details regarding Archie’s birth and celebrated his arrival alone.
They also kept Archie’s christening private, though they did share some pics of the event on social media.
Not passing on a royal title
Speaking of Archie, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also decided against giving him an official royal title. Instead, they passed on the family’s name, leaving their first-born son to be called Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
Opening up about her struggles
Members of the royal family usually keep their personal matters private to avoid raising scandals. But Meghan broke this royal protocol in a recent documentary titled Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Meghan Markle admitted that she has struggled to adjust to life as a royal and that she has been barely surviving behind the scenes.
“I have said for a long time to H, that’s what I call him, ‘It’s not enough to just survive something,’” Meghan explained. “That’s not the point of life. You have to thrive. You have got to feel happy.’ I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a ‘stiff upper life.’ I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.”
Meghan Markle is not afraid of PDA
The royals have become famous for not showing affection in public settings. That has changed somewhat with the younger generation, but Meghan and Harry have pushed things even further.
The two were frequently spotted enjoying cute dates around the city before they got married. They are also never afraid of holding hands or leaning in for a quick smooch in front of the cameras.
Fighting the tabloids
Meghan has faced a lot of issues with the British press over the years, which is one reason why she and Harry often keep to themselves. Despite their attempts at privacy, the couple recently filed a lawsuit against two British tabloids for publishing some of Meghan’s personal letters.
Meghan Markle originally wrote the letters to her father, who ended up passing them along to the tabloids. The royals rarely ever speak out against the media, so the couple’s lawsuit is actually a pretty big deal.
Ditching a royal Christmas
Every year, Queen Elizabeth invites the top members of the royal family to her estate in Sandringham. Although Meghan and Harry have spent two Christmases with his family, they skipped the holiday tradition in 2019.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ditched the royals and enjoyed Christmas with her mother, Doria Ragland, in California and Canada.
