‘American Idol’: What Could Stop Lionel Richie from Returning Next Season?
Another season of American Idol has ended and it’s unknown if judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan will return next season. What could stop Richie from returning? Here is what he said and more.
American Idol ended with Laine Hardy winning over Alejandro Aranda
Season 17 came down between Laine Hardy and Alejandro Aranda. It seemed like Aranda was a favorite so it shocked many that Hardy won.
What really set Aranda apart from other contestants was how he impressed the judges in his audition playing the guitar and performing an original song. Perry noted that in her feedback to him.
“Look, I love being on American Idol,” she said. “But of course, some would say in the past, American Idol — you know, it’s been a bit of a karaoke show. Not anymore. When people like you come on, you bring original music. You bring artistry, and you make the stakes even higher.”
Perry is still showing her support for Aranda. He announced that he is going on tour after the show on Instagram. She commented, “Let me be a roadie pls.”
The show will return but will the judges?
It has already been announced that American Idol will return for a third season on ABC. However, the future of the judging panel is unknown.
Perry, Bryan, and Richie are reportedly being offered deals to return, according to TV Line. However, it has yet to be a done deal and since ratings went down their salaries might be affected.
Will a possible cut lead to a shakeup? Richie had something to say about what would make him walk away from the show.
Richie said he wouldn’t do another show without Katy Perry and Luke Bryan
The judge is so fond of his fellow judges that he said he wouldn’t do the show without them. He talked about this with reporters, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“What will it take? The same things we did this year,” said Richie. “I’ve got the greatest three personalities ever. Now, when I started out with this group, I was a bit worried. I kept telling America, ‘Pray for me.’ But now that I know who everybody is and their characters, oh my god, I would not do another show without ’em.”
Bryan went on to talk about how well they work together. “We’ve had an amazing two years,” he said. “When you just look at the overall approach, we had a clearer vision, we developed our identities and roles, and we want to keep that going. We’re proud of what people are at home watching…. I know Lionel is getting it, and Katy — when we’re walking down the street and somebody comes up and says, ‘We love the way y’all are treating these kids on American Idol,’ it feels really, really great.”
Fans are going to have to wait to see if Richie will get what he wants. Hopefully, an announcement of when the next season will premiere will come after the casting news.
