‘America’s Got Talent’: Howie Mandel Jokes About His Secret Behind Staying on the Show
The cast of America’s Got Talent has changed multiple times throughout the years. Some of the former judges and hosts also left on bad terms with the network or Simon Cowell.
One person that has weathered many seasons is Howie Mandel. How has he stayed for 10 seasons? This is his answer and more to know about the recent casting change.
Heidi Klum and Mel B have been replaced for Season 14
Heidi Klum and Mel B judged on the show since 2011. That changed when it was announced they’ll be replaced for Season 14 by Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough.
“One of the many secrets to the success and longevity of America’s Got Talent is its fearless drive to reinvent itself,” Meredith Ahr, President of Alternative and Reality Group at NBC Entertainment said according to Deadline. “The next evolution of the format brings in fresh expert eyes to join Simon and Howie on the panel.”
They certainly aren’t the first judges to be replaced on the show, or even the only change this season. Tyra Banks also reportedly left to produce more projects and has been replaced by Terry Crews.
This new season might have two new faces, but there is one familiar one. One person that has stayed around is Howie Mandel. How has he managed to do it?
Howie Mandel joked that his salary is his secret to staying as a judge
The judges might have changed once again, but Mandel will return. He was asked how he managed to stay for 10 seasons and he had a funny answer.
“I think if I had to put one word on why NBC keeps me on the show, I would say affordable,” Mandel told People. “I would like other people to know I’m affordable. It doesn’t cost you that much, I’ll show up.”
He then added, “I do accept coupons. I think that the people of NBC are part of the Groupon deal and I think I’m part of one of that purchase.”
Mandel revealed that he still keeps in touch with some of the former judges. That includes Howard Stern, Sharon Osbourne, Heidi Klum, and former host, Nick Cannon.
Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough revealed what it’s like working with Mandel
The new judges opened up about what it’s like working with Mandel. It turns out Union is a little worried about what will make it into the show.
“[Howie] and I are like the bad kids in church who should never be seated next to each other,” she told TV Insider. “We make our own jokes that I’m hoping don’t end up on air — my mom would be mortified. I went into it remembering Simon from American Idol. I was expecting super harsh criticism, but I actually call Howie the [mean girl] Regina George of our panel. He’s more direct.”
Hough said, “Howie is a sweetheart, and Simon is definitely more of a softie than he lets on.”
So Mandel jokes that his low salary is what is keeping him on the show. Either way, fans seem to love him giving feedback to amazing acts.
