The 11-year-old violinist went on the show and talked about how playing the instrument helped him. He started playing the instrument at 7 years old and was diagnosed with cancer at 4 years old.

He was also bullied for being different and was treated with chemotherapy that caused his hair to fall out. Things changed when he started taking violin lessons and he has been in remission for four years.

“When I play the violin, it helps me forget about all the bad stuff,” Butler-Figueroa said on the show. “I just didn’t want to be the kid with cancer. So now I’m the kid who plays the violin.”

He played Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” for the judges. Once he was done he got a standing ovation. Cowell had nothing but good things to say.

“I can tell you one thing–most people are bullied because they’re better than the people who bully them,” he said. “And I think you have such an amazing talent, such a personality, and I would like to say something on your behalf to the bullies.” He then hit the golden buzzer.

Fans are happy with Cowell’s choice

Last week’s golden buzzer winner was controversial because it was the second singer to receive the honor. Howie Mandel’s choice with Joseph Allen might have not gone over well, but this week got a different reaction.

It looks like America’s Got Talent fans were very moved by Butler-Figueroa’s story and performance. One fan tweeted cheering that an act that didn’t involve singing also got the honor.

Gabrielle Union tweeted at him with, “.@TButlerFigueroa you are as real as they come. A true star and I am so in awe of your immense talent. Bullies, bye #agt.” Mandel tweeted his performance with, “This violinist left me speechless. Quite the remarkable talent, and a remarkable story, all paired with @TButlerFigueroa’s dreams coming true. Congratulations bud. #AGT.”

Julianne Hough also tried to get the young man’s inspiration to notice him. “I hope @kellyclarkson finds as much joy in this #GoldenBuzzer performance by @TButlerFigueroa as we all did. Take that you bullies!” she tweeted.

He has videos posted on Instagram

America’s Got Talent fans probably won’t see the young contestant for some time given the golden buzzer means he goes straight to the live shows. They can watch his older stuff online now.

Fans can watch little Butler-Figueroa play more music on Instagram. He is seen performing on the streets of Raleigh.

Some of the performances include “Believer” by Imagine Dragons, “Walk It Talk It” by Migos, “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, and more. He also has a Facebook page that shows more of his performances.
