An ‘Extraction’ Sequel is Happening With the Russo Brothers
Rotten Tomatoes may have only given it a score of 68%, but Extraction is a certified hit for Netflix. The Chris Hemsworth action flick landed on the platform on April 24 and is still soaring in viewership.
It’s like seeing Thor in a different light. The film’s ending left some things up in the air, and people wanted to know if there would be more to the story. Well, the Extraction team has more work to do, and you shouldn’t be surprised if Hemsworth is there.
‘Extraction 2′ is happening
Comb through the web and you’ll find explanations about Extraction’s ending and interpretations about Hemsworth’s final scene. His character, Tyler Rake, was seemingly dead at the end of the movie after being shot in the neck and falling off a bridge.
There was blood pouring out of his mouth and it looked like the end. But was it?
Perhaps not. According to Deadline, Joe Russo of the famous Russo Brothers and Netflix firmed up a deal for a sequel. They don’t know where the story is headed, but fans have their fingers crossed for more Tyler Rake.
Russo told the outlet, “The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be. We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
Excitement swirls about an ‘Extraction’ prequel
Years ago, the Russo brothers penned a graphic novel that the story is based on and the film script had a different title, Ciudad. This eventually turned into Extraction.
Director Sam Hargrave—who worked with the Russos on Avengers—took a look at the new script and was already familiar with the story. He told ScreenRant he thought the story was amazing but at the time, there was a different director on it. The movie plan was scrapped and later revived.
When the Russos partnered with Netflix and brought Hargrave on board, he couldn’t help but see the possibilities of other storylines within the Extraction universe.
Hargrave told Collider he thinks a prequel would definitely be interesting, especially with the ending and the relationship between Rake and Gaspar.
“There’s a lot of potential; it’s so interesting. And again, the beauty of an ambiguous ending is that there’s a lot of ways you can go. You can go forwards or backwards. Either way you look on the timeline are very interesting stories.”
Who else is on board for ‘Extraction 2‘?
Though the Russos believe Hemsworth and Hargrave will return once the script is ready, nothing has been inked yet. Once that step is complete, Netflix will work out deals with the cast and crew for part 2.
Besides high viewership, the film received lots of support from Kevin Feige and other members of Marvel’s team. But fans love it too. According to Netflix’s statistics, more than 90 million households viewed Extraction, making it the most successful feature film on the platform.
It’s too soon to tell if the audience will see more of Tyler Rake in or out of Ovi’s life, but seeing him and David Harbour’s Gaspar would make for another fun ride.
