Andy Cohen Reveals Intimate Details of his Son’s Birth
We are used to seeing Andy Cohen in his role as Watch What Happens Live host or stirring the post on The Real H
The role of being a father.
This morning PEOPLE released photos of Cohen and his son Benjamin Allen Cohen’s first photoshoot together.
He and Benjamin will grace this week’s cover of PEOPLE.
What was the delivery like?
“I was in the delivery room,” he told PEOPLE of the birth. “I had been hoping that he would have a full head of hair, and he really over delivered. That was the first thing you see, the head of hair coming out. And I was amazed.”
Cohen even cut the umbilical cord himself and then held his baby skin-to-skin which is a common way for parents to build intimacy with their babies.
“He was so alert for the first two hours,” Cohen continued. “His eyes were wide open. He didn’t cry; he was just calm. I kind of have no words for it.”
Benjamin was born via surrogate on February 4th.
Baby News
The talk show host first announced that he was having a baby in December on his show Watch What Happens Live.
“I want you to be the first to know that after many years of careful deliberation, fair amount of prayers and the benefit of science, if all goes according to plan, in about six weeks time, I’m going to become a father thanks to a wonderful surrogate who is carrying my future,” he said. “Family means everything to me and having one of my own is something I’ve wanted in my heart for my entire life and though it has taken me longer than most to get there, I cannot wait for what I envision will be the most rewarding chapter yet.”
Cohen explained that he had always wanted to be a father but didn’t know if it would be possible for him as a gay man.
“When I was growing up, and when we were growing up … I just never thought it would be possible as a gay man to grow up and have a family,” he said on the show. “And here we are in 2018, almost ‘19, and anything’s possible. And I’m so grateful to a wonderful surrogate that I’m working with.”
In December, Cohen revealed live that he was having a baby boy on CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper.
“I cannot wait to meet this boy,” he said to Cooper.
Relationship
In March of 2018, Cohen split from his boyfriend Clifton Dassuncao. Since then, he has not commented publicly on if he has found a new beau or not.
After the split, he told PEOPLE that he was looking for someone who is very independent and preferably has not seen any of The Real Housewives episodes.
Though he has said in the past that he would like to get married, he has yet to comment on if he plans to raise Benjamin as a single parent or not.
