When Did Andy Samberg’s ‘Popstar’ Come Out?
Film Twitter is talking about a movie, but it’s not Avengers: Endgame, Shazam, or any of the other big or small films coming out in 2019. Instead, it’s a movie from the past: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The mockumentary musical has long been underappreciated, and yet is experiencing a resurgence years after its debut. Here’s what you should know.
What is Popstar about?
Popstar follows a boy band, The Style Boyz, which features Connor Friel, Lawrence Dunn, and Owen Bouchard. They have a meteoric rise in the industry, but behind-the-scenes drama causes them to break up. Connor becomes a solo act, though he struggles to continue creating original music. In the end, the group manages to come back together in a unique way.
It stars the Lonely Island
Saturday Night Live fans may recall the Lonely Island, the comedy trio that became famous for performing comedic musical numbers on the show. Andy Samberg is the most well-known of the group, which also features Akia Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. In addition to their hilarious music videos, they’ve collaborated on two films: Popstar and the 2007 comedy Hot Rod.
The film came out in 2016
The Universal Pictures film was released on June 3, 2016. Judd Apatow was a producer, as were Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone. All three wrote and starred in the film as the boy band members in question. Taccone and Schaffer directed the movie.
Despite an all-star cast, a prominent studio behind it, and solid critical reviews, Popstar was considered a commercial failure. It only managed to gross $9 million on a $20 million budget.
So why is everyone talking about the movie now?
This is the big question, and there isn’t really any solid answer. But on April 8, 2019, critic Josh Lewis tweeted a deleted scene from the movie, in which Samberg’s Connor4Real (his solo stage name) performs a very NSFW song. The tweet amassed many likes and retweets, which led to “Popstar” trending on Twitter in the U.S.
Here’s what people are saying about Popstar
The general consensus is that Popstar is an extremely underrated film. Not only is the soundtrack full of amazing original songs, but the mockumentary style is on par with that of classics like This Is Spinal Tap.
The movie’s passionate fan base is coming out in droves and, needless to say, they’re ready to fight for it. And, frankly, it’s making Twitter a better place.
If you don’t own the film on DVD or Blu-Ray, it looks like you might be missing out on some of its incredible content, as this is one movie that comes with bonus features galore.
If you’re not convinced (and at this point, how can you not be?), many fans are sharing their favorite clips fromPopstar. (All very much not safe for work, just so you’re aware.)
The themes of the film are so relevant that some even took the opportunity to score these scenes with the 2019 Best Original Song Oscar Winner “Shallow.”
And though the music is definitely its stand-out feature, there’s plenty of other comedy gold in this extremely undervalued flick.
In summation, go watch Popstar. Maybe all of this press will even encourage a streaming service to pick it up.
