Angelina Jolie Has Apparently Been Talking to Her Ex Billy Bob Thornton

It’s been more than nearly 20 years since Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton ended their, um, eccentric relationship. But the two are apparently still very much in contact with each other.

The Bad Santa actor recently did an interview with Us Weekly where he revealed that he and his ex-wife have been talking. So, what’s the deal? Is a reconciliation on the horizon? Or are they just friends?

Thornton said that his relationship with Jolie is platonic

Thornton made it clear that he and Jolie are just friends. After all, he’s off the market. He secretly got married to a woman named Connie Angland in 2014.

“We’re good friends. We’ve been friends for years and years and years,” the Love Actually actor told Us Weekly on September 13. “So we keep up with each other. She’s not in town a lot, so we don’t see each other much, but we talk.”

For her part, Jolie hasn’t said much on their relationship since they broke up. However, she’s suggested that they’re on friendly terms. For example, she wrote the foreword to Thornton’s 2012 book, The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts.

A recap of Jolie and Thornton’s romance

He and Jolie met around 1999 while shooting the film Pushing Tin. By 2000, they were married and had started to develop a reputation for their bizarre antics, such as wearing vials of each other’s blood around their necks and buying his-and-her burial plots.

But their union did not last long. They split in 2002, and their divorce was finalized in 2003. The divorce came about a year after they announced that they’d adopted a baby boy from Cambodia named Maddox, who is now in college.

Jolie later moved on to Brad Pitt, who adopted Maddox. They also have five other children. The Mr. & Mrs. Smith actors married in 2014 following a nearly 10-year relationship but broke up two years later.

Why Jolie and Thornton broke up

Thornton opened up to GQ about their split back in 2016, telling the publication, “I never felt good enough for her.” He said he preferred to stay at home and do things like watch baseball while she was off doing humanitarian work. It also didn’t help that she was always mingling with “rich and important people,” which made Thornton uncomfortable.

“We just had different lifestyles. Hers is a global lifestyle and mine is an agoraphobic lifestyle,” he added to the HFPA in Conversation podcast in 2018 (via People). “So that’s really, that’s the only reason we’re probably not still together, maybe. There was a different path in life we wanted to take.”

Obviously, it sucks to see two lovers break up. But it’s great to see that Jolie and Thornton were able to salvage their relationship and remain friends. With any luck, she and Pitt will be able to get on the same page one day.
