It’s been nearly 20 years since the debut of the delightful ugly-duckling turned princess tale, The Princess Diaries. The film put Mary Poppins legend Julie Andrews back on the big screen, and it introduced up and coming actress, Anne Hathaway to the world. The film, which was adapted from author Meg Cabot’s novels of the same name, was so successful that it spawned a cult following and a 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
There have been whispers about a third Princess Diaries film for some time. Did Hathaway just reveal that she’s ready to put Mia Thermopolis’s crown back on?
Is there going to be a Princess Diaries 3?
Meg Cabot confirmed the script for The Princess Diaries 3 some time ago, but there has been very little information about the movie since then. Recently, while visiting Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Anne Hathaway gave us inside information on what’s really going on with the third film. The Love & Other Drugs actress told Cohen,
There is a script. I wanna do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase our producer wants to do it. We all really want it to happen, it’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything unless it’s ready. But we’re working on it.
So there you have it, The Princess Diaries 3 is still in the works.
How old was Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries?
The Princess Diaries was Hathaway’s breakout role. Though she’s gone on to star in everything from The Devil Wears Prada to Ocean’s 8, the Academy Award-winning actress was just 18 years old when director Gary Marshall cast her in the Disney classic opposite Julie Andrews. The role catapulted her into superstardom.
Who wrote The Princess Diaries?
Produced by the late Whitney Houston and Debra Martin Chase, and adapted from the Meg Cabot book series of the same name, The Princess Diaries scripts were written by Gina Wendkos and Grey’s Anatomy creator, Shonda Rhimes.
Is The Princess Diaries based on a real-life character?
We certainly wish Mia Thermopolis was based a real person, but she is a character that Cabot came up with. The author revealed on her website,
I was inspired to write The Princess Diaries when my mom, after the death of my father, began dating one of my teachers; they later went on to get married just as Mia’s mom does in the book! I have always had a ‘thing’ for princesses (my parents used to joke that when I was smaller, I did a lot of insisting that my ‘real’ parents, the king and queen, were going to come get me soon, and that everyone had better start being a LOT nicer to me) so I stuck a princess in the book just for kicks… and VOILÀ! The Princess Diaries was born.
Is Genovia a real place?
Though we’d love to visit Mia and Queen Clarisse in real life, Genovia is a fictional European country. In The Princess Diaries movie and its sequel, Genovia is a kingdom located between France and Spain.
