Anne Hathaway Reveals New Details About ‘Princess Diaries 3’
If you were also obsessed with the 2004 heartwarming favorite, The Princess Diaries, you probably heard the rumors pertaining to Princess Diaries 3 in 2017. But all of that got a lot more exciting when Anne Hathaway confirmed the movie could be a reality during an interview on What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. It seems as if the cast is just as pumped for this sequel as we are.
Hathaway says there is a script for ‘Princess Diaries 3’!
In the segment, Hathaway confirms it: “There is a script.” The crowd of 20 people on Cohen’s set gasps on cue. She calls her adoring crowd “cute” and Hathaway carries on to tell us that she wants to do it, Julie Andrews is in, and the producer of the original films Debra Martin Chase is involved too. Hathaway also explains that it’s too early to reveal anything else because they want it to be absolutely perfect and that The Princess Diaries series is just as dear to their hearts as it is ours.
Even before Anne Hathaway’s interview with Andy Cohen, Meg Cabot (the writer of The Princess Diaries books) confirmed that a script exists and it is sort of a dedication to the late director of the first two movies, Garry Marshall.
Cabot also revealed that the third addition to The Princess Diaries will certainly stray from the plotline of the books, she said to Entertainment Weekly. “I think of them as two different universes.”
Julie Andrews, the former Mary Poppins and more recently Clarisse Renaldi, Queen of Genovia, talked to Buzzfeed in 2017, telling us Hathaway has a secret idea for the film. Andrews said, “Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to…”
Mia Thermopolis will most likely be in Manhattan
Before Garry Marshall died in 2016, he was planning on creating a Princess Diaries 3 as well. His idea was to set the third movie in Manhattan, as he mentioned in an interview with People Magazine. Sadly the director could not see his idea made into a reality, but most likely the movie will still be set in bustling New York in his honor.
Who will be cast in ‘Princess Diaries 3’?
Heather Matarazzo confirmed if the sequel does come around she will definitely come back to play Mia’s spunky best friend Lily. In her interview in July of 2016 she told Cosmopolitan, “If Annie and Julie are down, of course.”
In July 2017 Mandy Moore told Elle she’s willing to appear as Lana in the rumored sequel. “If I’m going to be involved, I would be down for a cameo—maybe she could make amends with Mia and apologize for being a bully when she was younger. She was insecure, going through a difficult time in her life and reflected on why that wasn’t okay.”
In January 2016 during an Entertainment Weekly fan Q&A, Chris Pine admitted he’d be happy to return to the role of Mia Thermopolis’ beau. “Don’t you pray every night for a Princess Diaries 3?” asked a fan. Of course, Pine replied with, “Have you been reading my diary?”
It seems everyone wants a Princess Diaries sequel, but everyone also wants it to be perfect so it will probably be a while until we get release dates and trailers, but we’ll just have to keep our eyes out.
