Another of Marvel’s Young Avengers Will Join the MCU in ‘Ant-Man 3’

After uniting the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame left the future of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes very much in doubt. So fans were left unsure when or even if to expect Avengers 5. Most of the surviving heroes have moved on to their respective film series or migrated to Disney+. But the MCU might be setting up for a whole new Avengers team in Ant-Man 3.

Phase 4 of the MCU introduces a lot of new heroes into the mix

Throughout its first three “phases,” the MCU created something that had never been brought to the big screen before. But many of its longtime characters — and nearly all the original Avengers — are on their way out. So Marvel Studios needs some fresh faces to keep the series thriving. To that end, a big focus of Phase 4 will be setting up the next generation of heroes.

Many upcoming Phase 4 movies and shows feature a passing of the torch. Black Widow and Thor: Love and Thunder largely hinge on introducing new versions of their titular heroes. And on the TV side, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk all feature longtime supporting players either taking the spotlight or mentoring new heroes.

‘Ant-Man 3′ will bring 1 member of the comics’ Young Avengers team

This influx of new heroes will continue past Phase 4 too. Avengers: Endgame introduced a now-teenage version of Cassie Lang, daughter of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). Fans already speculated that Cassie could follow in her father’s footsteps. After all, the character becomes a superhero names Stature in the comics. The latest news seems to confirm this.

Disney recently dropped a ton of news at its “Investor Day” event. And on the studio’s official Twitter account, it confirmed some key details about Ant-Man 3. Director Peyton Reed is back with stars Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer. But the movie — now officially titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — also adds Kathryn Newton as Cassie.

Newton replaces Emma Fuhrmann, who plays teenage Cassie in Avengers: Endgame. The actor is a rising star, currently starring in horror-comedy Freaky. And Newton’s casting indicates Cassie will be a major figure going forward. After all, Cassie’s superhero alter-ego Stature is a key member of the comics’ Young Avengers, a team that might be heading to the MCU soon.

Marvel Studios might be planning a ‘Young Avengers’ series or movie

Rumors have been swirling that the Young Avengers could be rising up to fill the void left by the MCU’s original superhero team. And the upcoming slate of projects points in that direction. For instance, Disney just confirmed Hailee Steinfeld and Dominique Thorne will join the MCU as Kate Bishop and RiRi Williams aka Ironheart, respectively.

Although Steinfeld’s casting in the Hawkeye show had been reported for a while, the Ironheart Disney+ series surprised fans. And with a new Hawkeye and Ironheart — who served as a successor to Iron Man — in the MCU, the Young Avengers line-up starts to take shape. Now it just remains to be seen if Kid Loki will join Stature, Hawkeye, and Ironheart.
