‘Ant-Man 3’: Here’s What We Know So Far

Avengers: Endgame proved to be quite the game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ final showdown with Thanos certainly left fans questioning what would happen next. After all, how could Phase 4 possibly go any bigger?

More and more, the MCU looks to be taking the opposite approach, focusing on smaller-scale stories for awhile. Of course, no Marvel hero knows small like Ant-Man. Rumors have swirled whether Scott Lang might be demoted to a Disney+ series in lieu of a third film. So let’s explore what’s next for the Ant-Man series.

Director Peyton Reed and his cast is returning

After months of wondering when they’d see Ant-Man again, fans now have their answer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has not only greenlit Ant-Man 3 but signed on director Peyton Reed. Reed directed both 2015’s Ant-Man and 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The series’ principal cast — led by Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly — is largely expected to return. Michael Douglas has already confirmed he would be back as Hank Pym for the third installment. Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Peña, David Dastmalchian, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Bobby Cannavale, and Judy Greer will likely return as well.

One star who will probably not appear in Ant-Man 3 is Abby Ryder Fortson. Thanks to the five-year time jump in Avengers: Endgame, Emma Fuhrmann assumed the role of Cassie Lang. We’ll get to why her character might be so essential in Ant-Man 3 shortly.

Filming begins in January 2021

During the same interview in which he confirmed his return, Douglas also revealed that shooting on Ant-Man 3 begins in January 2021. According to Marvel’s schedule, production on the film will follow that of the upcoming Doctor Strange and Thor sequels. Both of those films are slated with 2021 release dates.

Disney’s Chief Creative Officer/Co-chairman Alan Horn recently said that Marvel Studios would soon be releasing four films a year. Based on its production and Marvel’s release schedule, this places Ant-Man 3 as a likely 2022 release. Perhaps the project might even serve as the springboard for Phase 5.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige unveiled the full slate for Phase 4. Comprised of both theatrical films and Disney+ series, that timeline ends in 2021. Besides, based on speculation, Ant-Man 3 might be instrumental in setting up the MCU’s future.

‘Ant-Man 3’ could be a critical piece of Phase 5

At this point, no plot details for Ant-Man 3 have been revealed. But fans continue to speculate how the film might be the perfect venue for a new team of Avengers. As it turns out, fans may have already met part of this next generation.

In the comics, Cassie follows in her father’s footsteps to become a size-changing hero known as Stature. She eventually becomes a major part of a team called the Young Avengers. While we don’t expect a full team to play into Ant-Man 3, the roster certainly needs an injection of new blood.

If Cassie does become Stature, Ant-Man 3 could feature as many as 5 size-shifting heroes. If the film ends up being the last MCU entry for Douglas and Pfeiffer, fans deserve the chance to see them finally suit up. With its focus on family, it’s not at all far-fetched for Ant-Man 3 to go full Incredibles with it. Ant-Men and the Wasps, anyone?
