‘Ant-Man 3’ to Introduce the Rumored ‘Benefactor’ Into the MCU: Next Big Bad?

A while back, news got out that Marvel Studios was looking to cast a mysterious “benefactor” in the MCU. Following the casting announcement — listing features typical of a few nefarious formidable foes — rumors began circulating concerning Doctor Doom and Norman Osborn. Both are likely contenders for the character given the listed description, as well as the recent Fox/Disney merger and the ever-changing Sony/Disney agreement with Spider-Man.

The casting announcement called for a “male, preferably caucasian, in his 40s to 60s,” according to MCUExchange, and multiple other outlets that hopped on the leak. However, recent news has brought this so-called Benefactor back into MCU conversation, as the character may be making his fateful first appearance in Ant-Man 3.

According to We Got This Covered, the Benefactor’s identity will be revealed in the highly-anticipated third Ant-Man installment, as the character to take on this description will come to threaten Ant-Man, and some of his superhero friends, via a connection to Hank Pym.

What we know about ‘Ant-Man 3’ and the Benefactor so far

Sources close to We Got This Covered (WGTC) told the outlet that the character, “currently only known as the Benefactor, will step out of the shadows in the threequel…”

In the 2018 sequel to Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, villain Sonny Burch is seen employing Ghost Technology to steal Pym particles for the so-called Benefactor, as WGTC notes, laying the groundwork for the ultimate Ant-Man story to come to fruition; however, the villain will play a role destined to outlive his Ant-Man appearance.

The outlet goes on to confirm that the Benefactor will come to be a “major Marvel Universe villain;” meaning, Ant-Man will serve to introduce the next big threat to take on the Avengers — whoever winds up being a part of the team sans Captain America and Tony Stark.

Why the MCU’s Benefactor could be Norman Osborn or Doctor Doom

While the Benefactor’s identity has yet to be revealed, sources close to WGTC confirmed that it will be Doctor Doom or Norman Osborn. And, considering the same sources sharing this information knew that the real Mandarin would be the villain in Shang-Chi and that Taskmaster would be the villain in Black Widow, there may be a shred of credibility to the announcement. While all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, either of these two character introductions would make sense.

Doctor Doom could pave a pathway to the Fantastic Four, which has already been heavily discussed, while Norman Osborn could open up a greater leadership role for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man who, according to multiple rumors, may be sticking around for quite some time.

Osborn is a tech genius who many would love to see come to life once more; however, he has received his fair share of attention in the Spider-Man movies already. Will the MCU go with Doctor Doom and do justice to a character Fox previously butchered? All remains to be seen.
