‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’: Everything We Know About Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp Costume
Although Evangeline Lilly was in Ant-Man as a prominent character, Ant-Man and the Wasp< is really proving to be her movie. Hope van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym, finally gets to suit up alongside Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd). Although Ant-Man’s suit looks mostly the same for the sequel, the Wasp is getting some sweet new threads.
Speaking to Hello Giggles, Lilly confirmed her biggest request about the suit she would be wearing in the movie. It has to do with how her backside looks.
“I was like, ‘This is gonna be … oh. This doesn’t work. Why is my bum flat?” said Lilly. “I have a really good bum guys, come on. Work with me here.’” After some adjustments, they finally got it right.
“I put it on and you could feel everyone in the room went,’Oh, there she is.’” Lilly continued. “Then it was like they couldn’t get it off of me. I was like, ‘No, just let me wear it a little longer.’ I’m dancing around the room. I should have been fighting around the room but I’m not actually the Wasp, I’m Evangeline Lilly. Hi. I danced.”
Here are some other cool notes about the Wasp’s suit. The first of which is that, well, the internet doesn’t really care for one aspect of the design. Specifically that many think it looks like Hope’s outfit has a penis on the front, pointing down toward her crotch. No, seriously. And once you see it, you really can’t unsee it.
But there’s also the fact that the color scheme created for the outfit actually has a mixture of gold and silver, creating a new color that they’ve tabbed “gilver.” In general, it’s a really cool superhero costume. And despite her self-proclaimed “really good bum,” the suit made Lilly feel a little bit of pressure to get in even better shape to live up to the hype.
“I kind of just stay in good shape, that’s how I like to be,” she said. “So I was thinking, ‘Oh, I don’t have to work out or do anything to get ready for this role. I’ll just be myself. I’m fit, so it’s fine.’ And then I put the suit on and tried to swing some punches. After 10 minutes of mitts I was dying … So, I realized I might need to do a little more conditioning to play a superhero in a formfitting leather suit.”
But Lilly’s co-star came in with some sage advice, having worn the Ant-Man suit in two movies already. Rudd knows what’s important to worry about, and what they’re going to let the actors get away with. In short, Rudd and Lilly wouldn’t be doing much of the action on their own.
“There isn’t an inch of us that shows when we are fighting ’cause we’re in…suits,” said Lilly. “He’s definitely had some kind of wise, let-me-give-you-some-advice talks with me, which is, ‘They’ll never use you [to film certain scenes].’ So you might as well let the stunt people do what they do and focus on your performance.”
There is more that we know about Ant-Man and the Wasp, as well. The original Wasp is returning in the movie, with Michelle Pfeiffer being been cast as Janet van Dyne. We learned in Ant-Man that Janet was lost years ago when she shrunk so small that she went sub-atomic.
But there are a lot of questions going into the movie about how Janet has survived all this time. Did she age differently during her time in the Quantum Realm? How will she be rescued? One executive producer touched on the topic, acknowledging that the fans are curious how they’re going to explain everything.
We will definitely get into all those questions. That’s part of the questions that our heroes have. It’s such a — the mission, so to speak, is kind of this wing and a prayer, this mission of faith, that they’re hoping she’s down there kind of thing as they go on it. And they have those same questions. What has life been like for her, you know?
Much of Ant-Man and the Wasp is going to deal with the Quantum Realm, which many Avengers: Infinity War fans have theorized might come into play in Avengers 4. Set photos from next year’s Avengers movie have sparked fan theories that Ant-Man may travel through time to alternate dimensions, possibly to collect the Infinity Stones.
There are plenty of stars packed into the movie, with Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne joining the original cast. Although not much is known about Fishburne’s character, we do know that the trailers make him appear as though he’s an ally of Pym’s. However, Lilly may have revealed on her Instagram that Goliath — the character’s nickname — is the true villain of the movie.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is set to hit theaters on July 6.
