Anthony Rapp’s Allegations Uncover a Dark Aspect of Sexual Misconduct in Hollywood

There have been many victims of alleged sexual misconduct coming forward in Hollywood. Many of them are actresses who talked about producers and other powerful people who harassed them and then threatened their careers if they ever came forward. But now the new freedom to talk has inspired other types of victims to come forward.

Another reportedly kept secret in Hollywood is that some powerful people in the industry have preyed on underage actors. Many former child stars, like Corey Feldman, have talked about this problem and the system of covering it up in Hollywood — but there haven’t been many specific names dropped until now.

Anthony Rapp’s allegations against Kevin Spacey might open new floodgates for alleged victims to speak their truth. Here are seven things we know, including what Rapp said and some other former child stars who have talked before about this dark aspect of sexual misconduct in Hollywood.

1. Anthony Rapp claims Kevin Spacey made a sexual advance toward him when he was a teenager

The Star Trek: Discovery actor told BuzzFeed News that back in 1986, Kevin Spacey reportedly invited him to his apartment for a party when they were both performing in Broadway shows. At the time, Spacey was 26 years old and Rapp was 14 years old. By the end of the party, Rapp claims that Spacey made a sexual advance on him in a bedroom.

“My memory was that I thought, ‘Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,’” he told BuzzFeed News, adding that Spacey “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk.”

He then continued, “He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me.” He then said Spacey “was, like, pressing into me” and was “tightening his arms.” He then said he managed to “squirm” away.

It didn’t take very long for the House of Cards star to respond to Rapp’s allegations with a statement. On Twitter, he said:

I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”

3. Corey Feldman has spoken about a child abuse ring in Hollywood for years

As an adult, Corey Feldman has been pretty open about all of the things he and Corey Haim experienced as child stars. He told The Hollywood Reporter Haim was abused and believed that the abuser was protected through an organized system.

Feldman said he was also a victim. “With me, there were some molestations and it did come from several hands,” he said according to People. “So to speak, but with Corey, his was direct rape, whereas mine was not actual rape. And his also occurred when he was 11. My son is 11 now and I can’t even begin to fathom the idea of something like that happening to him.”

Feldman now says he wants to make a film about pedophiles in Hollywood and wants to raise $10 million to finance it.

The Diff’rent Strokes actor wrote about his experiences growing up on a famous sitcom in Killing Willis. There, he also wrote about his publicist Ronald Rayton. He said Rayton reportedly promised to turn him into a bigger star with his connections. He also claimed that at 12 years old, Rayton put his hand on his crotch while they were driving back from an autograph session, according to the New York Post.

Bridges said he eventually began pushing back from Rayton’s alleged predatory behavior. One time, he wrote when Rayton came to pick him up, he hit him and yelled, “You freak! You dirty freak!” When Bridges’ mother found out, he wrote that she came out with a butcher knife and told Rayton to never come back.

The daughter of Mia Farrow and adopted daughter of Woody Allen came forward about sexual child abuse allegations. She wrote an open letter for the New York Times after Allen received a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes.

In it, she said Allen sexually assaulted her when she was seven years old. Allen later came out with his own response in the New York Times writing:

TWENTY-ONE years ago, when I first heard Mia Farrow had accused me of child molestation, I found the idea so ludicrous I didn’t give it a second thought. We were involved in a terribly acrimonious breakup, with great enmity between us and a custody battle slowly gathering energy. The self-serving transparency of her malevolence seemed so obvious I didn’t even hire a lawyer to defend myself.

Allen has continued to have a film career and continues to claim his innocence.

6. Elijah Wood said he doesn’t have firsthand experience with abuse but there are ‘a lot of vipers in this industry’

The Lord of the Rings star was also a working child star, so he was asked about child abuse in the industry before. This led to reports that he might have been a victim too, but that was false. He later clarified in an interview with The Sun, “I had just seen a powerful documentary and I briefly spoke with the reporter about the subject which had consequences I did not intend or expect.”

In his original statement, Elijah Wood does say there is a problem in the industry that needs to be looked into after the reveal of Jimmy Savile’s scandal. “Clearly something major was going on in Hollywood,” he said. “It was all organized. There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind.”

7. There is a documentary on this subject called An Open Secret

There has also been some attempt to get a dialogue going about this problem through a film called An Open Secret. It talks about the convicted sex offender Marc Collins-Rector, and how he managed to get into Hollywood’s elite.

While the larger problem is certainly worth exploring, not all the claims featured in the movie are airtight — especially given Michael Egan is a big focus. Egan filed lawsuits in 2014, accusing Bryan Singer, Gary Goddard, Garth Ancier, and David Neuman of sexually assaulting him when he was a minor. Those lawsuits were dropped, and his lawyer, Jeffrey Herman, later issued an apology for filing the lawsuits.

“Based on what I know now, I believe that I participated in making what I now know to be untrue and provably false allegations,” said Herman.

The documentary also features other former child actors in the industry and their experiences.
