It’s a sad day for SNL fans. Leslie Jones announced she will not return to SNL for its newest season. Jones was part of the cast for five seasons. Are any other SNL cast members leaving before the upcoming season starts?

Why is Leslie Jones leaving ‘SNL’?

Leslie Jones first appeared on SNL in 2014. She became a cast member on the show when she was 47 years old. This made her the oldest cast member in the history of the show. She has been nominated for three Emmy Awards for her work on SNL.

After she leaves SNL, Jones has several upcoming projects.

According to Marie Claire, “she’s hosting and executive producing Supermarket Sweep, a game show reboot that NBC, ABC, Netflix and Fox are all currently bidding on… Plus, she’s got an hour-long comedy special coming to Netflix in 2020.”

Jones also has two movies coming out. She has a role in Queenpins and is co-starring with Kristen Bell. Jones will also appear in the sequel to Coming to America with Eddie Murphy, James Earl Jones, and Wesley Snipes.

What else has Leslie Jones been in?

It should come as no surprise Leslie Jones has other projects in the works. Since joining SNL, Jones had several comedy roles in movies and TV. She also has a strong social media presence and has experience with sports commentary.

Jones had a small role in the film Trainwreck. She also was one of the stars of the 2016 film Ghostbusters with her SNL co-star Kate McKinnon. Jones also had voice roles in Sing and The Angry Birds Movie 2.

During the 2016 Olympic Games, Jones live-tweeted her reactions to the sporting events. This led to NBC asking Jones to commentate on the remainder of the events. For the 2016 Olympic Games, Jones covered swimming, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and track and field. She also covered events during the 2018 Olympic Games.

Fans are sad to see Leslie Jones leave ‘SNL’

While Jones was only on SNL for five seasons, she was a fan favorite. Her appearances on Weekend Update were often standout moments from SNL episodes. Because of this, SNL fans are sad to see Jones leave.

“Bummed at reports that Leslie Jones is leaving SNL. In every way an exceptional cast member: one of the show’s oldest ever and one of its most electric,” a Twitter user wrote.

“I’m really going to miss Leslie Jones on Saturday Night Live. Her skit as Gayle King interviewing R. Kelly is going down in history as one of Saturday Night Live’s funniest moments,” wrote another.

Other ‘SNL’ cast members are staying

While Jones opted to leave SNL, it looks like other cast members chose to stay. Even though McKinnon also has a growing career outside of SNL, she will stay on the show. Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, Aidy Bryant, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Colin Jost, Alex Moffat, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd, and Melissa Villasenor seem to all be staying as well. Thompson is currently the longest-running SNL cast member in history of the show.
