Are Daisy Ridley and John Boyega from ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Friends in Real Life?

The Star Wars films have been the beginnings of many beautiful friendships. Farmer Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) never would have crossed paths were it not for their adventure. Likewise, The Force Awakens brought Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) together. The Rise of Skywalker is their third adventure together.

The films made real-life friends out of the actors too. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley spoke about their friendships at the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker press conference on December 4. The film is now playing in theaters.

John Boyega met Daisy Ridley while they were auditioning for ‘Star Wars’

While they were auditioning for the movie that became Star Wars: The Force Awakens, John Boyega had a cult following from Attack the Block. Daisy Ridley was working in British television. They bonded before the world discovered them.

“I’ve been able to chat with Daisy really more than anyone else just in terms of circumstance and understanding of culture, an understanding of our background and where we’re from,” Boyega said. “While we were auditioning, I’d see her. I happened to run into Daisy, we were auditioning. We were just able to relate on even that kind of level.”

Daisy Ridley opened up to John Boyega

Keep in mind this sort of connection is rare in Hollywood, especially as early as the audition stage. Most actors keep to themselves in their process, but John Boyega says he and Daisy Ridley share everything.

“Most of the time actors have this mystery about their personal things,” Boyega said. “I think having this connection more than anything, if I feel any type of way or if I experience something that’s weird or if I’m at a store and I just bought something, I always message Daisy because I just know that’s something we’ll 100% relate.”

The feeling is mutual for Daisy Ridley

Rey may be the character who interacts with every other character in this Star Wars trilogy. She reciprocates John Boyega’s friendship and opens it up to all her costars. Daisy Ridley says the friendship you see in the film is real.

“I’m basically bouncing off of Oscar and John, Joonas [Suotamo] and Anthony [Daniels] in such a joyous way, just like you’re having a chat with your pals,” Ridley said. “So it’s not that difficult but it’s strange wondering how that general vibe is going to translate into a scene.”

John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are friends in real life too

John Boyega was having a love fest for everyone. He shared how he hit it off with Oscar Isaac from the beginning.

“I think it was natural,” Boyega said. “The chemistry was blatant and it was a natural vibe between me and Oscar. I don’t even know why. I just like the guy. I felt most comfortable when I was doing scenes where Poe was involved anyway because I’ve always liked the guy and feel just like the boys.”

They’re friends with J.J. Abrams too

It’s not only Star Wars cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac who are friends in real life. J.J. Abrams directed the trio in The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. He goes back even further with Boyega.

“I really do genuinely respect J.J. because he’s not bullsh*t,” Boyega said. “The way I mean that is when you come into this industry the way I did, the way Daisy did, you get a whole bunch of promises and a whole bunch of people telling you this is going to happen, that’s going to happen.”

J.J. Abrams delivered for John Boyega.

“I remember him saying, ‘I really liked you in Attack the Block. I’m going to get you in something,’” Boyega said. “I would talk to J.J. for several times before Star Wars on the TV shows they were doing. It just so happens that Star Wars was what I was right for. I appreciate you not being like the rest of this industry talking sh*t half the time. I respect you for that.”
