Are Jo and Alex Married on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’? Season 16 Puts Fans Through a Loop

Say what you want, but Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers) are meant to be together. The couple may not have written vows on a Post-It note, but they did manage to get married on a boat with their closest Grey Sloan friends. But, as the Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 premiere approaches, fans are now wondering if Jo and Alex are actually married. As it turns out, a throwaway line from the 15th season might cause a rift in the couple’s future.

Jo and Alex never legally married, according to the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 16 trailer

In the Grey’s Anatomy trailer for season 16, Alex takes Jo to a treatment center in the premiere. But, as he drops her off, Jo tells Alex he can leave her. “We’re not even legally married,” she says. “You have an out.”

Excuse us? Fans might be understandably confused. Jo and Alex married on a boat — as mentioned above. Nevertheless, it seems Jo is right. In the eighth episode of season 15, entitled “Blowin’ in the Wind,” the ABC drama revealed Jo and Alex never filed their marriage license.

During the episode, a great storm hit Seattle, causing the couple to be shut in their home. Jo is looking for something to cook with when she finds their marriage license hidden away. “If you don’t mail it in, it’s not official,” Jo explains to Alex, who was the one responsible for the mistake.

“So we’re not married?” Alex asks, clearly concerned. However, his attention is drawn away as he receives a call from the hospital. And apparently, the couple didn’t remember the incident, because they still aren’t legally married in the season 16 premiere.

What will happen to Jo in season 16?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 proved to be one of the toughest to watch in terms of Jo’s storyline. The young surgeon met her birth mother and found out she was a product of rape. She then began spiraling into depression. However, it looks like Jo will start to deal with her trauma in the upcoming season.

When speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Krista Vernoff explained what Jo’s future looks like following the season 15 finale.

“We showed the beginning of the healing process,” Vernoff said. “And the next step of the healing process is getting treatment. She needs treatment and that’s what we see. So, while it makes you cry in the finale to see her and Alex say goodbye to each other, I believe that it’s a happy cry because Jo is getting the help that she needs.”

Then in an interview with TV Guide, the showrunner confirmed Jo will continue on the road to recovery. “Now, we want to honestly depict the fact that you can recover,” she shared. “People can put in the work and heal and recover. I’m really excited for everyone to see that.”

Now, as for what this means for Jo and Alex, well, that remains uncertain. Honestly, we can’t imagine Alex and Jo splitting up, even if they aren’t legally married. And luckily, Vernoff can’t either. When speaking with TVLine, Vernoff hinted at her hopes for the couple in the new season.

“I hope therapy brings her back to herself and Alex,” Vernoff said. She also wishes Alex “to heal that wound that keeps repeating, where he chooses women who go into mental-health crises. I’d like to see that story complete for him, with Jo returning to him in a way that’s beautiful.”
