Are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Making Money on Religion?

Since January, Kanye West has been showing off his spiritual side every Sunday with a musical worshiping event that he calls “Sunday Service.” The Kardashian clan has been praising Kanye for the creative way that he has decided to showcase his faith. The Kardashian sisters said Kanye’s Sunday Service is a more relaxed atmosphere than regular church and it is a great way for people to worship God without feeling like they are being judged.

While most Sunday Service events are by invitation only, Kanye had recently brought his religious musical event to one of the biggest music festivals of the year: Coachella. Fans were delighted that they would finally be able to see the iconic hip-hop star’s Sunday Service. However, once they had finally made to the top of the mountain where Kanye and other musical performers would be performing, they noticed that not only was Ye giving fans a religious experience as they have never seen before, but he was also selling merchandise to commemorate the special occasion.

Since he was selling what he called “Church Clothes,” many people felt that this was just a creative way for Kim and Kanye to capitalize on religion. So, where the famous couple using people’s faith to make money? Here is what we know.

Kanye’s Sunday Service brought in quite the crowd, including his wife Kim Kardashian. The event started at 9 am sharp on Easter Sunday. Several hip hop artists, a choir, and a group of dancers joined Kanye on top of a hill in Coachella Valley to play gospel music and have a unique religious experience. There were crowds of people that had already started to gather to watch Kanye’s performance before the sun had even come up that morning.

Thanks to the power of video streaming over the internet, people all over the world were excited to finally get to see an entire Sunday Service. However, the ones who tuned in online to watch Kanye were quickly disappointed when they realized that they were only able to view the spiritual performance through a tiny circle that made it look as if you were watching it through the peephole of your front door.

What are Kanye West’s ‘Church Clothes’?

Because Kanye’s Sunday Services are supposed to be a casual alternative to actual church, he sold what he referred to as “church clothes.” If Kanye was trying to go for a casual look, he definitely achieved that. The clothing consisted of your choice of either beige or brown colored sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants, and socks. The shirts and sweaters had inspirational quotes on them, like “Holy Spirit” and “Sunday Service at The Mountain.” If you wanted one of these shirts, it would cost you between $165 and $225. The socks, which had the words “Jesus” and “walks” on one pair and “Church” and “socks” on the other pair, cost an incredible $50 each.

Despite the fact that the clothing was being sold at a ridiculous price, hundreds of people stood in line for hours just to get their hands on some of Kanye’s merch. Other artists, like Pharrell, had no problem with the price tag apparently. At his recent concert in Virginia Beach, Pharrell was spotted wearing one of Kanye’s sweatshirts that were on sale at Coachella. We have don’t really know if Pharrell actually bought the shirt, or if it was given to him. Either way, it is obvious that the singer of the hit song, Happy, was impressed with Kanye’s “church clothes.”

Is Kanye West capitalizing on faith and religion?

Many fans were more than happy to pay such an extravagant price for some of Kanye’s pretty basic-looking merchandise. However, there were also plenty of people who thought that Kanye was asking for a ridiculous amount of money for some of his religious apparel.

Some people took to social media to voice their frustration at the fact that they thought that Kanye was only using religion to make more money. One fan even took to Twitter to say how they felt that the fact that Kanye was selling religious apparel for so much money on a religious holiday (Easter Sunday) was “straight-up Blasphemy.”

While selling religious apparel is nothing new, we can see why some people may be upset about the fact that Kanye was charging high-end designer prices on clothing that looked like you could get at your local thrift store. What’s more, if his Sunday Service is about spirituality, why is an already-wealthy family trying to make money off the event?

His wife, Kim, fully supports him. “I’m really excited for Kanye to perform [at] Coachella. I’ve never been,” Kim recently shared with Elle.com. “I’m so excited to be a part of it for the first time. And [the church], it’s honestly more like a healing experience for my husband. It’s just music; there’s no sermon. It’s definitely something he believes in—Jesus—and there’s a Christian vibe. But there’s no preaching. It’s just a very spiritual Christian experience.”
