Are Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton Allowed to Wear Pants?
Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have very important roles in the royal family. Although both women married into the family, they’re still working royals, which means they get paid to make appearances on behalf of the queen and royal family. But with the title of working royal comes plenty of royal rules — especially about fashion. Are Meghan and Kate allowed to wear pants?
Both Meghan and Kate are often praised for their fashion choices
Since marrying into the royal family, Meghan and Kate have both made bold fashion choices that are often very well-received by commoners and the media. Kate has been praised several times for her more affordable outfits, yet she always seems to look classier than she did the previous appearance. Meghan tends to opt for higher-end brands more often, but she always wears them with grace. The media love to pay close attention to what each woman wears, including the color they gravitate toward most.
The two women are always spotted wearing either dresses or skirts
Kate has been a part of the royal family since she married Prince William back in 2011. Since then, she is always spotted wearing high-fashion dresses and skirts. Meghan has not even been a member of the royal family for one year, but for every high-profile event she attends, she is always wearing the same. Often, the two women’s outfits to the same event are compared by the media, but it’s been hard to determine who has the better sense of style. People tend to favor Kate’s style, but that could be because she’s had more time to find her own look after being a part of the family for nearly eight years. The women are almost never seen wearing anything besides a dress (or at least as skirt). But is there actually a royal rule that forbids pants? Not exactly.
The women are allowed to wear pants, but it’s not tolerated well by the royal family
If the women want to, they could “legally” wear pants. However, according to Harper’s Bazaar, it’s very frowned upon in the royal family, which explains why each of them stick to traditional dresses for appearances. One royal commentator told Harper’s Bazaar that since there is no actual royal rulebook, royals don’t have to follow the rules if they truly don’t want to. Meghan has worn pants on very few occasions, but the royal family typically would not approve of that outfit.
Harry reportedly told Meghan she was not allowed to wear any type of suit
Harper’s Bazaar also reported that Harry wasn’t happy with Meghan when she ordered several suits without letting him know. He essentially gave the suits a thumbs down, and there were reports that he had banned her from wearing them altogether. However, other royals, such as Princess Diana, have worn pants to certain occasions if they see fit. For example, a more casual event might warrant pants. But for anything formal, Meghan and Kate certainly would be expected to show up in a fashionable dress or skirt.
