Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Being Unfairly Called Royal Hypocrites?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been receiving a lot of good press this past year, and they recently managed to ruffle a few more feathers.
The two of them are known to be huge advocates for the environment, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might have done something that got people calling them “hypocrites.” Read on below to find out what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did, and whether or not this label is fair or not.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently made four trips by private jet
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been traveling a bit with their new baby, Archie. A couple of weeks ago, they went to Scotland to spend some time with Queen Elizabeth. Then, the family visited Ibiza, Spain, for a quick vacation before heading to Nice, France, for a short stay at Elton John’s home.
Throughout their travel, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made use of private jets to get from one city to another. They flew on these gas-guzzling planes a total of four times in 11 days.
There are complaints that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘don’t seem to care’
Phil Dampier, a veteran royal watcher, told the Daily Mail that he believes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle most likely did understand that these actions would cause some public outrage. However, the two of them seem to be apathetic about it.
“Whether you think recent criticism of Harry and Meghan is fair or not it’s worrying to me that they don’t seem to care and aren’t about to change their behaviour,” Dampier noted. “They must have known that taking private jets four times in quick succession would leave them open to charges of hypocrisy but they just went ahead and did it anyway.”
Meanwhile, Aaron Kiely, a campaigner for the organization Friends of the Earth, pointed out that the couple easily could have come up with other interesting modes of transportation such as trains and boats. “This would have been the perfect opportunity to set an environmental example,” Kiely said.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might have wanted privacy for their baby
Some royal followers have brought up the idea that Harry and Meghan might have opted for private jets to make sure that they could have a lot of privacy for Archie.
However, Ken Wharfe, a former bodyguard for Princess Diana as well as her sons, revealed that royals often fly commercial with British Airways. Wharfe told Vanity Fair: “BA were always very helpful with VIP departures and keeping the flights out of the press. I never had a problem with Diana, William and Harry on the numerous holidays we took to the Caribbean. We always flew commercial; in fact I don’t remember flying private.”
Wharfe even pointed out that, despite what people might believe, it actually might be safer and more efficient for royals to fly with British Airways since the airline is “used to working with VIPs.”
Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle acting hypocritically?
While the press is known for often reporting negatively on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it seems that this time, the reports are not blowing anything out of proportion.
Many people seem to agree that taking four private jet rides in a row is an extremely hypocritical move for climate change activists like Harry and Meghan, especially when just a few months earlier, Harry was talking about having only two children for the sake of the environment.
In any case, it’s possible that the public outrage now could be making Harry and Meghan rethink their future actions. The couple is due to visit Scotland again later this month, and hopefully, they will travel there in a way that is more environmentally-friendly.
